Certainly a Tribe all time great and NCAA record that will stand forever. Credit that his obituary suggested donations to the Tribe Club/Basketball.

51 reb in a game, beat UVA, best player in Virginia. The oh so many superstars we've had yet failed to dance...it's depressing.

It sounds like Mr. Chambers lived a great life and still held a special place in his heart for W&M.

Bill Chambers was always a gentleman....a wonderful human being and a great coach. After coaching became a legend in the sporting goods industry with Converse. He was soft-spoken, but his players
knew the steel behind the demeanor.

He's, of course, famous for his 51 rebounds against UVA, but he was much more than that, A clutch scorer and wonderful defender, was the MVP of the old Southern Conference Tourney back when it had all the Carolina teams even though we lost in the semi-finals and a two-time Helms All-American.

A great coach....two of his remembered highlights: beating Jerry West-led West Virginia in the old Norfolk Arena, ending WVA's 57-game Southern Conference win streak (Jeff Cohen had 37 points and Bev Vaughan 25 for W&M, and West 47 for West Virginia to defeat #2 WVA); winning the semi-final game over #5 West Virginia in the Southern Conference Tourney in the Richmond Arena,
holding All-American Rod Thorn to zero points.

He visited the College many times, as recently as last year despite ill health, and was a strong advocate for the W&M student-athlete concept and supporting the athletic program.

Had a chance to meet him on several occasions. Always was very kind. A true gentleman. Loved W&M basketball.
