DI Men’s Basketball Committee redefines quality win - MT FAN - 07-14-2017 01:45 PM

Looks like the committee is going to put more of an emphasis on away wins. This could lead to getting better teams at home, but I still see the committee screwing us out of NCAA bids.

They should simply just go ahead and say a quality win is against any team with a magic P5 patch on their jersey. Otherwise, its a lousy win, even if its against Gonzaga. How in the world is a CUSA team supposed to get several top 75 wins at home? We can barely get one or two on the schedule at all and are lucky if we get 1 at home.

Given the redefinition, why worry about whom we can get for home games? The other side of the coin is that every time one of our schools gets a win against a P5 or other non-P5 basketball power on the road, it counts more than if we would've beaten them at home.

I have no issue with the redefinition. Let the chips fall where they may. We just need to win, wherever that may be.

Rpi already does this

That about sums it up. The "NCAA" (100% controlled by the P5 schools) will continue to tweak the rules of every NCAA sport to the P5's advantage. With the massive revenue disparity created between P5s and G5s some G5 schools will begin to close altogether, not just drop athletics.

In basketball, there are definitely more than five power conferences. The Big East, without question, and the American, quite arguably, are as good or better than the football power conferences. The Big East got seven freaking bids this year, including the number one overall seed, and a three seed as well, so the NCAA seems to giving them their due credit. Yet people still talk about "Power Five" in basketball. It's at best lazy and at worst dishonest.

The most interesting thing for me in regards to that Michael is that it always seems to be fans of schools in conferences that average 1-2 bids a year that complain about a bias in selection. And no doubt there's bias. But until CUSA starts winning OOC games, we have no place to talk about it being unfair. Win your games and the teams that deserve it will get in there. Everyone whines when we don't get in and we were on the bubble, but the solution is to win and not be on the bubble. Create a body of work that the committee can't deny.

Exactly. And, for the record, my alma mater has not done a thing to help the Sun Belt, or the SoCon for over a dozen years before that, to earn at large bids.

UTA did have some room to complain this year, as their RPI was higher than many chosen at-large, and, thanks to some good road wins, they had the second highest RPI without being selected. But, as you suggest, they wouldnt be in trouble if they werent on the bubble. :rimshot:

As for C-USA, and the SB, for that matter, there just have to be more road wins.

All this means is that if you are Duke and play 22 of your 30 games at home and go 24-6 you may get lower seed than a school like Iowa who played 18 of 30 games at home with a record of 23-7.

It also means that a school like Vanderbilt who loses 15 games will be even more rewarded for not playing every game at home at the expense of a school like Southern Illinois. This will not help us in any way.

I don't ever see this happening because it usually happens every 2 years or so. But I think you should be ineligible for the NCAA tourney if you have a losing conference record. Why should a team from the ACC/BE/B12/Yadda Yadda Yadda be in the NCAAs with a 19-15 record with an OOC record of 15-1 and a conference record of 4-14.

This has been my biggest gripe for a few years now. If you don't have a .500 or better, you shouldn't even pass the eye test.

There should be scheduling mandates. Big schools play 90% OOC games at home. Having money shouldn't be an inherent advantage. Sports should be equal. That's what makes sports fun. No team should have an advantage out of the gate. Make tourney selection of teams 100% blind.

Does it really matter how they tweak the rules?

Nope but at the very least we should get some extra coin for the amount lube we will have to buy.

Exactly.
