Southern Miss had the best statistical D last season and it should be much improved this year. Some of our returning starters may be riding the bench this season. Losses on the OL and of starting QB make the season a mystery though.

By that if you mean less yards per-game, then yes. But S. Miss only averaged 56 or so plays on defense where Western had 72. Western's defense led the conference in ppg and yards per-play on defense

I don't ever blame any fan for laying claim to 1st spot in any stat. But in all my years of following both the college game and the pro game I've never understood how enamored some fans are over the yardage stat over the actual scoring stat.

Add in the fact as you explained Western not only led the conference in scoring defense they did it giving the opponents much more opportunities than anyone else.

Holt did one hella job last year. He did a damn fine job the year before. But last year's dee had some nasty to 'em. I have no idea what to expect other than what Sanford said the day he was hired. He wants physical. I like.

Our defense will be the strength of our team this year. Book it.
And our offense still won't miss a beat.

Our (FAU) defense scares me. How often do you get to score 56 and still lose by 3 (THREE!!!) TDs?
