Rice players who we predict will get drafted - Professor Smashmouth - 06-09-2017 10:26 AM

Outside of Otto and Myers, are there any players who are predicted to be drafted this year?

Gray

I predict Otto goes by the 5th round, Myers by the 10th round and Gray somewhere in the mid-teens. That's why I think Gray has better than a 50% chance of returning to Reckling next year. I'd put Dane somewhere around 33% odds.

Can we add to this list Rice recruits?
I wonder if Gray may have an axe to grind after be ineligible for the early part of the season. Could play a role in him packing his bags.

Sure - if you have any predictions on our recruits getting drafted, I would be curious to see those projections as well.

Yeah, I was told "he can't wait to get out of here".

Yeah, I was told "he can't wait to get out of here".

So, we are somewhere between ~ 1% chance of returning ( can't wait to get out of here) , and Better than 50 % chance of returning. Sounds like we nailed it down !!

We've had a couple of players through the years that were in the "can't wait to get out of here" camp and ended up not getting drafted and having to come back, so there is always that possibility.

Worth noting that, as horrible as Gray was when he first returned to the lineup, he was practically unstoppable over the latter part of the season.

In his first 18 games (3/14 - 4/11), he hit .142/.260/.238.
Over his last 29 games, he hit .407/.485/.708.

His season basically had 3 parts:
(1) Over his first 11 games (3/14-3/31), he was completely hopeless. He struck out 36% of his plate appearances and hit a woeful .132/.250/.184.
(2) The next couple weeks (4/1-4/11), he reduced his strikeouts, but still wasn't getting any hits or hitting for power. He hit a woeful .120/.241/.320, but at least only struck out 7% of the time.
(3) Over the last 29 games, as noted above, he killed everything to the tune of .407/.485/.708 with more BB+HBP than K's and a 12% strikeout rate.

If scouts think the last 29 games is anything close to his true talent level, then he's getting drafted before the 10th round.

As an aside, the now-banned lauderdaleowl suggested benching Gray on 4/4 because of Gray's struggles. Not sure Rice even makes the CUSA tournament if that advice has been followed.

He's been on academic suspension twice in 3 years. Why would he come back to school if he's drafted anywhere?

Depends on what round in the draft he goes.

I'm not sure it does. The senior penalty in the draft is just too damn high.

"He's been on academic suspension twice in 3 years. Why would he come back to school if he's drafted anywhere? "

To get the GPA back to an acceptable level?

It just depends. If he's drafted after the 10th round, the highest he can be offered without it counting against the team's draft cap is $100,000. If he thinks he can get himself into the top 5 rounds next year, then it would make sense to return. The "senior penalty" doesn't really apply to really good draft prospects, just mediocre ones. Kyle Funkhouser (Louisville) was drafted in the 4th round as a senior in 2016 and received an above-slot bonus ($750,000 instead of $516,200). There are plenty of seniors signed for below-slot as well (seniors lose some negotiating leverage). But it isn't a guarantee or anything, just depends on the player.

That said, he was a top-200 HS player coming out of high school (Perfect Game), he has a history of good contact skills and increasing power, he killed the ball at the end of the 2017 season, and his dad played minor league baseball (good blood lines). I haven't looked at any of the websites to see how he is rated, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if he goes in the top 10 rounds.

The "academic suspension" was bogus..he didn't do anything wrong but be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Having started in a hole with a less than stellar freshman academic year (hello academic advisor, "this schedule of orgo, vector, and physics seems very difficult, but if you think you can do it then okay" is not good advice for an incoming freshman), I can assure you that the returns from such attempts are marginal at best.

If raising your undergrad gpa is the goal, you're better off switching to another school where (1) the grades don't come quite so hard and (2) you're kind of starting from scratch, at least with regards to the new school. That way, if you have to share your GPA on an application, you can share your combined gpa (which will be higher than if you stayed). Additionally, if you have enough credits accumulated at Rice, you can complete your Rice degree with transfer credits. If you still don't have enough credits (or enough upper-level credits) at Rice, then you're likely not too far from the 48-54 credits remaining which most state schools require be done on their campus in order to get a degree from them, and might as well straight-up transfer (where your transcript will show transfer credits from Rice as P/F and will exclude them from GPA calculation).

Wish I had known this in 1965.

Ditto 1993. I did eventually get into law school though.

I think I had a similar experience with my freshman academic advisor. But my grade problems were more my fault than his. Maybe I should have listened to my high school guidance counselor, who said I couldn't make it at Rice.

Bigs, it's not his offense, but his defense that will cause a slip in the draft. I've heard from several scouts that he doesn't have the range of a MLB middle infielder, and I'm not sure he provides the pop for LF or 1B.
