Updated -- UNT inks two-game series with Houston

The North Texas athletic department has agreed to a two-game football series with Houston.

The series will begin with a game at Apogee Stadium on Sept. 28 of 2019. The Mean Green will then play at Houston on Sept. 23 of 2023

There it is. The 2019 UH game will replace the would-have-been 2019 Army game. Seems like a better option to me.

The optics of dropping two Army games for two Liberty games may not be great, but I think picking up this UH series more than validates it. IMO UNT's schedule is better off than before.

Hopefully UNT will be improved enough by then to make this an exciting match up! GMG

I like the Houston series... But, if we are going to pay Littrell a million a season, we should have a P5 home and home on the schedule. I hope our AD is still reworking our schedule.

Well, Texas Tech in a few years is a thing, right? I think it's like 10 years from now but hey!

Houston is way better than many so called power 5's. You know it I know it and everyone knows it.

They won a NY6 bowl 2 years ago. How many "p5" have done that. Very good get for UNT.

Houston has been good the lately, but they are not in a P5 conference. Fair or not, they don't garner the same name recognition, respect, or media interest teams from the Big12, SEC, Big10, ACC, or PAC. Houston is just another AAC game ESPN will dump on ESPN3.

Yes we have Texas Tech coming to Apogee, but that is about 10 years from now. We need a P5 home and home sooner then that. North Texas should dump Rhode Island in 2021, and sign Virginia to play at North Texas in 2021 and then UNT could play at Virginia in 2022. Virginia was 2-10 last season. That is a series North Texas should win against an AAC program.

Houston garners more so called "name recognition" that at least 20 "P5" programs. Put it this way, would you rather play Houston or Kansas (or any number of Kansas level "P5" teams)?

Not to mention the obvious benefit of a large crowd by playing an in-state rival. This is a great get for UNT. To bring in an excellent Houston program, which is going to draw well at your stadium is a win/win and way better than brining in some lower tier so called P5.

Pretty smart to get the first one in Denton.

I like the idea of getting Virginia to visit but it takes two to tango and they may not be interested.

I don't think anyone is doubting the value of playing Houston. But, I'd rather have Kansas come to Hattiesburg than Houston. I'm sure majority USF fans would rather have Kansas as a home game than Boise.

yeah, I like the home n home with Houston. Good addition to schedule. The issue wasn't dropping Army so much as the reasoning by the AD.

Can't speak for the majority of USF fans, but I personally would rather have a Boise than a Kansas type sign a home/home. You get zero credit for routing a Kansas type program.

I get a USM wanting to play Kansas, but for UNT, they get the added benefit of an in-state bragging rights rivalry game vs. a good, possibly great, Houston team. A no brainer.

Same here, I rather go to a Houston vs Boise game than Kansas. A couple years ago we played Vandy and it as was not a well attended game, there was a lot more interest in any of the conference games

Im okay with this. I like when we play other Texas schools. I prefer being able to talk trash to friends and neighbors in person, rather than hoping an online rivalry starts up on the message boards. And I feel like Houston will likely trend downwards under Applewhite for a few years, so maybe we can take that game in Denton.

The truth is we will sell more tickets to traveling fans when we play regional schools like N Texas, Texas St, UTSA, etc than we will for most of our conference mates. In turn, we will send larger groups to those nearby regional schools than we will to most of our conference away games. That's just life in a spread out conference.

I know and understand that UH and SMU have to take this last ditch chance to move up and make some money, but I wish there was some finality with it so we could start talking about a conference with the G5 Texas schools. If it reaches the point where the AAC schools are making closer to what the CUSA schools are making TV-wise, then it makes sense for us all to play each other every year for ticket revenue. We could bring up TXST too from the Belt and all of us would likely benifet. When the Big12 blows up, Tech, Baylor, and TCU might all be looking for homes too.

Keep yopur eye on the next AAC tv deal. If its a bust, that could be a trigger that gets the ball rolling toward regional conference reorganization.

Im pretty bullish on the next AAC deal, but a lot of people on this board think we will be lucky to get $500K a team. If the naysayers turn out to be correct, I think most of the AAC schools would be reconsidering the value of a huge footprint that generates very little media value.

Looking at where ESPN is placing some of these early OOC games, the number of subscribers the network is losing, and the layoffs occurring over there, it is becoming difficult to think the next AAC deal won't take some kind of a hit. How much, I have no idea, but I don't think it will be as bad as what happened to C-USA.
