Charlotte 49ers hire new MBB assistant coach - moss2k - 06-05-2017 03:19 PM
Normally assistant coaches aren't thread worthy here on this board. However, Charlotte has hired Ivo Simovic, Hartford's Assoc. HC. You'll see a change in Charlotte's roster over the coming years with more international flare.
Charlotte has already inked 2017 G/F Luka Vasic, who had signed with Hartford. Prior to signing with Hartford, Vasic was heavily recruited by Davidson, Notre Dame, SMU and WVU. Highlights from the homeland --> link

Biggest question is will Filip Petrusev follow them. He's a 2018 PF/C who is highly regarded. #3 ranked international recruit in his class per this --> link and this calls him a "potential lottery pick" --> link

Throw in some top players from Spain and France in addition to Serbia and you should be able to build a pretty solid team. All three of those countries have a lot of basketball talent.

Vasic and especially Petrusev are on a different level than the other euros we recruited in the past.
Certainly doesn't guarantee they'll be good, but our other Euros were mostly guys that weren't really sought after by many programs. These are players that are highly recruited by good programs.
Saint Marys and Gonzaga have built themselves into great programs hitting international markets hard and getting the top players in places like Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Maybe we can do the same in Europe.

I love this move. I have felt for some time that this market should be a vital part of our recruiting.

I think it's a good move! The staff needed a little shake up after last season and I think this puts us in a good direction for the future!

I think this says "Hey Coach Gray, what have you accomplished this month." We need all of our assistants landing recruits.

We tried that international route with a coaching hire (Morcos Morcos - who was also at UAB for a bit) and it came back to bite us in the butt. But I'll assume the guy you got has better ethics than Morcos.
