It has been some years, but yes, there have been varying levels of crime. I'm not going to name names because it was not published in the Pilot or on twitter. One of my good friends is a former player from the first couple years. That is why I'm hesitant to say for sure either way what Bobby will do.

Once everybody agrees then they come back to court and it is done. I am still hoping the felony charge goes away (plead down to something) and it becomes traffic court stuff. Over my years as a HS teacher/coach I saw incredible things done with issues like this both when the kids probably deserved it and when they didn't. Of course, Derek's age puts him past HS but he is still pretty young and they may deal him a break here as they often do. I would guess we have a few law folks on the MB who could give us insight from the inside.

I know a guy that was charged with felony hit and run (over 5k in damage) and DUI and it was dropped to a misdemeanor.

Most dont even know what Larry Pinkard did to get kicked off the team but it wasn't anything to do with breaking the law.

There are guys on the team that have had misdemeanors but are still with the team.

RE: Derek Wilder Suspended - monarx - 07-11-2017 02:56 PM

If its dropped to a misdemeanor he should be allowed to stay, if its a felony conviction... bye bye. Thats why I hate kicking kids off the team until the justice system has run its course. I don't want criminals on the team, but I also don't want falsely accused or people guilty of minor offenses having their lives ruined either.

I think the difference will come down to whether there is a victim with these charges. I don't think there is. Reinstatement could be a possibility.

RE: Derek Wilder Suspended - Lion Pride - 07-12-2017 09:54 AM

I really do hope that the charge is reduced and, if he has had no brushes with the law in the past, is reinstated by Bobby. He definitely made a dumba$$ mistake and needs to be held accountable. With that being said, I'm afraid Bobby may feel that that it would be perceived as giving preferential treatment. He is in a tough position and I hope that he treats him as he would any other player, whatever that is.

As long as he and Aquante are treated to the same standard and given the same chances, there should not be an issue.

Thornton isn't on the team, is he?

Good call. Graduated already. So that's no help.

Small blurb in the paper this morning says that Derek is out for the season due to surgeries on his wrist and knee. This would put his return from injury beyond the settlement of his pending court case.

Is Hannah/Hannon <sic> already gone.... or stuffed somewhere in a holding pattern?

Good luck waiting for that. Ed will probably mention in the footnotes in a few weeks.

Cal seems to be plugged in. I would trust him.

Can't disclose the source but it is true.

A Circuit Court judge this afternoon convicted Old Dominion University linebacker Derek Wilder, son of head football coach Bobby Wilder, and former player Aquante Thornton of felony eluding for speeding away from police on their motorcycles in May.

After finding the two men guilty, the judge suspended the imposition of their sentence on the condition of good behavior for 18 months. The judge also suspended Wilder and Thornton’s drivers’ licenses for 6 months.

He will probably never play for ODU.

Sadly, nor should he.

RE: Derek Wilder Suspended - Monarchist13 - 01-22-2018 02:54 PM

It would set a bad precedent if he doesn't get dismissed.

Im on the fence on that. I'm not sure all of the convictions that players have had already that have remained on team. I certainly would be in favor of violent/domestic violence offenses. I can even see a strong argument for all felonies. I could see one like this being some type of suspension.
