Thanks for the heads up. Coach Rowe is doing well so far recruiting the state of Florida. Having a game down there can't hurt. I like it. Hopefully, we will see more like these. Playing tougher competition can only help prep for CAA play, which is when the real season begins (IMO). Nice!

The last few years JMU has released the non-conference portion of the schedule in early August. I hope we'll see a few more interesting matchups in it like this one to help challenge the team before January.

Additional note...

...with the game at UF, depending on what other SEC games are going on that date, there is a chance the game will be televised via the SEC Network. At minimum, it will be streamed live via SEC Network Plus.

With these 5 games alone I think the OOC schedule for next year is outstanding for JMU.

OOC looking good. App State typically sucks at basketball but I'd love to see some BB and FB series started with them, Ga Southern, Charlotte, UMass, Temple, Navy, Marshall, ECU, ODU, etc. and lay the foundation for future rivalries. The more sports we can schedule with them the better. Why go all the way out to Montana and Texas when there's so much more to be interested in our backyard?

RE: MBB 2017-18 - JMUNation - 05-30-2017 09:54 PM

I agree. Lots of rivals located here on the east coast where our alumni can get to games in their area.

RE: MBB 2017-18 - Washingtonian - 05-31-2017 04:42 AM

I am glad the JMU/Mason series will continue for another 2 years.

RE: MBB 2017-18 - NJDuke97 - 05-31-2017 06:11 AM

Would also think that Charlotte and Longwood will be home games as well as returns from last year's road games. Possible UMBC on the road if it was a home/home series. With the other Florida game that's 9. So I believe between 2-4 other OOC games that will be revealed.

Still holding out hope - albeit diminishing - the Dukes get into an early season tournament. There are several which the field still has not been announced.

RE: MBB 2017-18 - NJDuke97 - 05-31-2017 08:29 AM

Yeah me too but I would be happy with 1 more P5/P6 road game to go with the Florida game and the rivalry games. I think as a practice JMU should play 2 power teams on the road or neutral site each season to really test themselves, help with rpi, get their name out there, etc. anyone from Uconn or Temple to WVU or Maryland/GTown would be cool by me. Last year they played no power teams- I hope they play 2 each year going forward.

RE: MBB 2017-18 - Wear Purple - 05-31-2017 08:37 AM

The things I like about a 2-or-3 game early season tournament are:

1. We can get at least 1 game against a power team potentially, perhaps more, and will be played on a neutral court.
2. It can help with recruiting when kids see they get a chance to travel to a nice locale.
3. It can build team chemistry on the road as well as provide a fun travel opportunity for all 7 of our MBB fans. :>)
4. Offers an opportunity to simulate a tournament atmosphere similar to the CAAT when things REALLY matter - i.e., 3 games in 3 days, win & advance.

If Deane was responsible for scheduling the past few years, he failed miserably IMO.
Hopefully, Rowe will help drive for some improvements moving forward.

RE: MBB 2017-18 - BleedingPurple - 05-31-2017 09:22 AM

I saw absolutely nothing wrong with the schedule he put together in 2014 - 15, UVA, Radford, Longwood, Colgate, Sacred Heart, Ohio State, Campbell, Richmond, ECU, Ball State, Norfolk State, and Valparaiso. It consisted of two P5 programs and three other teams (Valparaiso, Richmond, and ECU) that should be good match-ups for any JMU team, and some local teams easy on travel for either school but should go down as wins for the Dukes. We should walk away from that portion of our schedule with this type competition every year having lost three to four games and been tested during the process.

The final season with Brady was almost identical, but only had one P5. How can anybody complain about this? What would you want different Wear Purple? Last season he clearly got a late start as he didn't know he had a job until very late in the process. Hell, we didn't win them anyway, we might as well of been playing more games against the likes of Longwood. If you remember correctly, we started off the conference portion pretty strong winning the first three games, before reality set in that we were not any good.
