FB Signing Day Will Never Be The Same Again - emu steve - 05-09-2017 09:52 AM

The NCAA has officially adopted the two signing periods schedule for the next h.s. signing period.

The first ("early") will be Dec 20 - 22 and then regular will be in Feb, as usual.

These days are also incorporated in the mid-year JUCO signing period.

It means that a lot of programs will have signed say 2/3 (or more. a UofM might have say 80 - 90% signed early). of their new scholarship athletes before Christmas.

P.S. I like it. If a player has been committed for months, took his official visit in December, so sign, get it over with and end the poaching attempts...

this change is way overdue and it should benefit the players their families and the coaches

Agree. I'm sure EVERYONE would love to enjoy the Christmas holiday without worrying about recruiting, etc. etc.

As I suggested earlier, a coach like Harbaugh might sign 80 - 90% of his class now before Christmas and just wrap things up in January/Feb.

I'd guess C.C. will get maybe 67% of his recruits signed in Dec. as either mid-year JUCOs or h.s. commits. We are always into the last minute recruiting mode where a recruit hoping for a P5 offer starts looking G5 and also JUCOs not eligible for mid-year transfer.

As David Shaw, the head coach at Stanford said 4 days ago in SI...........it won't make much of a difference, it has no teeth, and it's still non-binding:

https://www.si.com/college-football/2017/05/05/stanford-cardinal-david-shaw-nfl-draft

SI: You were among the most vocal critics of an early signing period mostly because of the academic standards at Stanford. The NCAA ended up moving it up two months. How do you feel about that?

Shaw: December is manageable to me. Selfishly, we have a lot of academic things we need our guys to do. We might have a couple, but most of our guys aren’t going to be ready to sign in December, but it’s manageable.

For [schools] who want to do it earlier [than December], it’s untenable. It really is. What the coaches want to do is going to be counterproductive because many of them want to be able to lock up their class. But here’s the thing nobody can avoid: If a young man changes his mind between August and February, he’s going to be able to change his mind, so I don’t care when he signs. That letter of intent is not binding, so he’ll be able to appeal. So you’re recruiting two linebackers and you get both of your guys to sign early in August, you stop recruiting linebackers. In January, when your linebackers coach becomes defensive coordinator somewhere else, they're going to appeal, and now you have not recruited linebackers the entire season and now you have to scramble and get two more guys. Unavoidable. Guys think, ‘Oh, it will be great’ because they'll have guys locked down. No you won’t. They're still 16-, 17-year-old kids, and they might change their mind and when they change their mind, you won't be able to hold them to this contract because it’s not a contract.

I'm not sure I buy Shaw's points:

Lot of the coaching changes, for example, will have happened before Dec 20. Some won't but most will. Especially HCs - how many head coaches change jobs AFTER Christmas. Rare.

To me, if the November siging period in MBB/WBB works, then why shouldn't a 'better FB system not work????

The big issue might be December grades for h.s. players. A player who isn't fully qualified may need to sign in Feb after 1st semester grades are posted.

The DOWNSIDE is for coaches preparing for bowl games and trying to get early signees signed. Who wants to play a bowl game say Dec 18 - 23????

His primary point is the actual 'signing' of any LOI means nothing when these kids inevitably change their minds.

He specifically states........"you won't be able to hold them to this contract because it’s not a contract."

All this is really designed to do is get more of the top players to commit to the big schools a little earlier, so less of them don't wait until the final February 'signing' date to have their little hat picking ceremony. Does anybody really think that Saban or Harbaugh will now abide by some unwritten rule to stop recruiting other teams commits if they 'sign' early?

It's not going to benefit EMU at all. If what Shaw says is true (and I'm sure he knows way more about this than most), it's not going to lock some highly recruited, or late recruited kid into a MAC commitment. Even if he signs in December, he can still flip up until the very last day if the bigger schools come calling.

It's much ado about nothing by the NCAA. It actually just opens them up to more legal challenges, if as Shaw says, these LOI's really have no teeth.

E Tough:

I think you missed an important point, parenthical that Shaw made:

For [schools] who want to do it earlier [than December], it’s untenable. It really is. What the coaches want to do is going to be counterproductive because many of them want to be able to lock up their class. But here’s the thing nobody can avoid: If a young man changes his mind between August and February, he’s going to be able to change his mind, so I don’t care when he signs.

Empthasis is MINE.

Shaw was speaking of a hypothetical, i.e., a signing date BEFORE Dec. Well, that did NOT happen. The signing date is about 6 weeks early.

I don't see a big problem.

Recruits will finish their h.s. season and take officials in early Dec. Most do not take all 5 allowable visits.

I think Harbaugh, etc. would feel by the first couple visit weekends in December that they main targets have visited and committed.

Most of these kids will visit the weekends of Dec. 2 and 9, 2017 and go home and ratify their decisions.

A smaller number will remain undecided and opt to take a visit or two in Jan. and sign in Feb.

RE: FB Signing Day Will Never Be The Same Again - EagleTough - 05-09-2017 12:31 PM

It's not a big problem Steve. I never said it was. It's nothing, zilch, nada. Some kids will commit 6 weeks earlier and 'sign' an LOI. The signed LOI is still not binding so it means nothing. Kids will still flip if they want.

Next subject.

Dear Friends,
I'm pleading ignorance, but from what I have read in this thread, if a letter of intent is not binding in December, why is it binding in February?

I disagree with E Tough on this.

The LOI is binding. The only questions are 'loopholes' allowing the athlete to rescind his LOI.

This changes nothing about that. There will always be circumstances in which the athlete asks for an out.

Agree. I think Shaw's comments meant little esp. the hypothetical (August signing period) which didn't come to pass.

He did discuss some issues particular to his school, but I have little sympathy. When you coach at Stanford better make sure your recruits are damn good students.

So what does this mean for '79 and others here:

The fax machines will be humming December 20, 2017. That will be the big day.

Quite frankly, the regular signing day in Feb will be anti-climactic.

True.

The fmr national signing day, AKA Christmas for college FB fans in Feb, will lose most of its meaning.

I'm forcasting that about 75 - 80% of all h.s. signings will occur Dec 20 - 22. That doesn't leave much for the first Wednesday in Feb.
