Bohol: B12 lacking talent and Boren recovering from heart surgery - murrdcu - 05-04-2017 10:24 AM

1. The Big 12 is hurting, and that should excite Tom Herman. After yet another devastating showing in the NFL draft when only 14 players were selected — the fewest of any Power 5 conference — there is a power vacuum that the new Texas football coach can fill. The ugly results are a clear reflection of subpar talent in terms of evaluation, recruiting and coaching, and the league had better pay attention or it will suffer in terms of money, television ratings, attendance and beer sales. Sure, its smaller membership than the other leagues with only 10 teams hurts those draft numbers, and Oklahoma is the sole remaining heavyweight in a league of Kansases, Iowa States and, yes, Texases lately, which is why expansion was mandatory. Of the 12 slots in the three-year-old College Football Playoff, only one has gone to a Big 12 team in the Sooners, and only the Longhorns have even played for the national championship in the last 12 years. That’s lame. Pick it up, Big 12, or it’ll be the death of an already-sick league.

[/i]4. Oklahoma president David Boren underwent heart bypass surgery and has been recovering for a month. His term as president of the Big 12 ends next month at the annual meeting of the conference’s presidents and athletic directors. “It’ll be nice to have a lighter agenda,” commissioner Bob Bowlsby said. “Expansion? I have not seen it on the agenda.” The Big 12 has new presidents at Baylor and Kansas State and an interim one at Iowa State, and the league elects a new executive committee with a new chairman on May 31-June 2.

So is Boren potentially stepping down as OU President as well? For the sake of his health, that might be a good move. He's no Spring chicken.

Or does he stick around long enough to guide OU to the next destination?

If he steps down it changes two things. 1. The push for the inclusion of OSU. 2. The push for the Big 10 from an administrative level. It could leave the donors and Trustees more latitude to change course without having to disrespect the opinions of a beloved leader. But if they replace him with a pro Big 10 guy who is not bent on protecting OSU it could focus their direction to the Big 10 as well.

Boren steps down as B12 President, but will still be OU President for years to come.

Boren wants to leave as longest serving president in OU history. In the past he has looked out for both OU and OSU in the best interests of the state of Oklahoma. If it looks like survival will require ditching OSU, then he might step down before the next realignment move as a way to show he didn't like the projected out comes.

A bypass at his age changes everything. His stamina will be low. His powers of concentration likely diminished. And his priorities will change. It will be months before he is back up to speed. If he is 10 years younger and has one it's still tough, but the recovery time is quicker. I think he hits a Dirty Harry moment, "A man has got to know his limitations!"

The Big 12 has some serious issues. But if anyone thinks that Baylor, Iowa state, Kansas, Kansas state, or Texas Tech are going to let OU or Texas just leave the conference. Then you haven't been paying attention. Those programs aren't going to let P5 status walk out the door. They will strike any deal that they can to stay relevant. Because once OU and Texas leave. They are doomed.

Cheapest way out is walking away after the GOR expires. The Baylor 's of the Big 12 will still sue for damages regardless, but they don't have a case when all those schools fulfill alll their obligated TV contracts. After that, those Baylors can't sue you for any lost revenues as nothing was guaranteed through an existing contract.

Baylor is under investigation by the Feds now. The Clery Act and Title 9 investigations will be ongoing. When the Feds are through the NCAA will rule. They could lose their voting privilege in the Big 12 if sanctioned by the conference in the wake of some rather large findings by the Feds and then the NCAA.

Then the magic number is 7, or possibly 6. That's much more doable. Then a Texa-homa deal with someone taking Kansas and another West Virginia gets it done. I could easily see T.C.U. and Kansas to the PAC. Heck at that point just having the SEC take Texa-homa, Kansas and West Virginia would be feasible. But the point is while waiting on the GOR in the end these schools lose revenue. We lose revenue, and what's more the prices for the top 3 product just go up. It will be interesting to see what kinds of packages are offered. At least our hands aren't as tied as those of the Big 10, and we have more to offer than the PAC.

I think they replace and move ahead, probably with a lot less money but much more of a fair and working conference. Probably AAC level.

My point is that the rest of the Big 12 will forgo whatever amount it takes to keep OU and Texas.

I actually think that your correct. The idea of the Big 14 could actually happen after OU and Texas leave. Although I still believe that the current Big 12 will expel Baylor from the conference. Probably add Houston to take their place. But the notion of the Big 14 with a TV network might actually be better than what most currently have.

They would be better off competitively if they took in B.Y.U and Houston and maybe added Tulane for demographics. Those three could replace Kansas, Texas, and Oklahoma. Then if OSU, T.C.U. or West Virginia were to find a home then you still have Memphis and the two Florida schools to work with.

I agree Baylor is likely to be expelled or at least lose their vote on conference matters. If those schools remaining still want to schedule Texas, OU and KU for the notoriety and money then they had better keep their traps shut. Even S.M.U. if they pick it up could join.

And I seriously doubt that Texas ever roped itself into anything other than the LHN. But we'll see.

I do not access to his health records, but as a former member of a cardiac surgery program, I can tell everyone that Boren may, after a few months of cardiac rehab, will probably feel much better and have more stamina. There is a reason he had a bypass.
