Campus construction and projects - Deez Nuts - 05-03-2017 01:32 PM
I was looking for a place to post this, and I couldn't find a thread on general JMU campus building construction. It may have been on the old board. Anyway, I was mulling over campus projects that have been completed, been ongoing, or coming up. Overall, there's not a lot of construction happening on campus right now - DHall is the main spot. Hotel Madison, if you can count that, but it's not a University project. But next year, man, there's some big major projects coming up.
Finished in the last year:
Mason/MLK/Main st parking deck. $20M
UREC expansion/reno. $57M
CHBS $57M
Apr 2017 Madison Hall (former cancer center). $24.5M
July 2017 University Services Annex (Grace Street)
Aug 2017 Sonner Hall Reno
Current projects:
2016-2017 JMU Farm renovation.
2016-2018 D-Hall. ~$81M
2016-2018. Hotel Madison (though not a University construction project) May 2018.
Upcoming:
Summer 2017: HHS partial renovation, demolition of Grace St house (formerly the graduate school HQ).
Dec 2017: West campus parking deck (on Grace Street). $12M
Jan 2018: Wilson Hall renovation. $20M
March 2018: Convocation Center & parking deck $88M
April 2018: Dormitory (500 bed, located on/near the old softball field). $40M
May 2018: Demolition of Chandler Hall, & CoB Learning Complex construction. $65M
May 2018: Demolition and reconstruction of Phillips Hall/PC Dukes. $35M
I probably left some out, but these are the ones I can think of that have budgets and tentative dates.

Technically the conference center that's connected to the hotel is (or will be) owned by JMU, so its fair to say the hotel is a joint university/private project. And it certainly would not be happening if the university was not involved as the land the hotel sits on is owned by JMU.

I don't think I've seen/heard anything about the new dorm on/near the old softball field, seems like it would be an outlier of sorts in that spot.

Is PC Dukes/ Phillips Hall really being demolished and rebuilt on the same site? Or is it just being renovated? That was built while I was in school; surely the shelf life is longer than 30 years. Harvard's been using the same buildings for hundreds of years.

And I wonder if the project to rip down the Village and replace with dorms that better match the upper campus (bluestone w/red tile roof) is still being considered? I remember seeing something about that a while ago, but it was in the long range plans.

Well yeah, but the school is a lot larger than 30 years ago. I can tell you from personal experience in 2010-2014 that the lines were out of control during the lunch and dinner hours. And trying to find a seat was near impossible. The facilities are fine, they just need it to be able to serve a much larger amount of students at once.

Very much agree with this. A lot of the times I went to eat both lunch or dinner ended up being on off hours just to get around the insane lines

I think the Phillips Hall project is more of a 'let's build a facility that can actually be a dining hall' versus a 'let's smush a dining facility into a building that used to be a lecture hall and ballroom'. A second major reason that it's being done NOW is because once Dhall comes back online in 2018, DHub can serve as a temporary dining facility while Dukes is replaced. Then DHub's usefulness will have passed.
Unsure if the Village reconstruction is still a long range project, but it probably is. Some of the immediate need for dorm space comes from taking Chandler offline in 2018. The University has little interest on replacing (village) buildings that still serve a useful purpose, and which also carry no debt. I've heard that straight from Charlie King's mouth, and he's right. Why take on more debt if you don't have to at this time? Granted, the village isn't luxury living, but it doesn't make fees go up now if you don't replace them now.
also a new traffic light going in at Mason/Grace, and some road realignment and more turn lanes being added there, on main street, and MLK this summer/fall too.

I went looking for that and I couldn't find it. I'm curious what they're doing out there as well. An old RFP suggested structural improvements, parking upgrades, and an amphitheater. I just know it's on the slate for completion this summer.

Wow...my last couple of years, that was the quiet dining option. Always tables available and no lines.
As far as the Village, I really had no complaints except the lack of AC when it got unseasonably warm in March or October. And now their location is much more central.

I haven't seen/heard many details about it, but I think there may be new student housing planned where the rec softball field is located next to the convo general parking.

A little history of the Farm and its general location. I have been to it a few times and it was certainly a treat - peaceful and relaxing.

I'll add that the "farmhouse" on the property is (by design and original construction methods) a building that likely dates to pre-Civil War. It's been in a deteriorating condition for the last 20 years or so, with the university trying to board it up, and vandals breaking in and leaving graffiti inside. It could (with thoughtful restoration) make an ideal retreat for small conferences/think-tank type meetings. The JMU Farm is an idyllic property, and well worth the effort and time to visit it.
