Holy C**p! I didn't see this coming. The best to Jack.

Just sad all around.

Maybe Whitman decided he was ready to get on with life's work?

Wow. No idea the story here, but still wish the best for Jack. So many possibilities here - just hope that Jack is able to find the right life path for himself from here.

Maybe all this had nothing to do with W&M or our coaches after all.

Hopefully nothing bad, he just decided he doesn't want to play.

Jack was going to be behind three other big men and #1 2018 recruit, 6'10" Marvin Bagley, is considering reclassifying to 2017. Kansas now has the scholarship Self needed to pursue him. Welcome to big time basketball.....

Let's look at it this way. He got his degree from William and Mary, and he can do what ever he wants. He's absolutely capable of playing over seas. Hopefully he gets to follow whatever dream he has

I've heard that the big man from Florida met all classifications for the transfer except the academics.

Well, Tony commented in general a month ago, that the difficult part about grad transfers for the program is that they are on their own with respect to admission. That would have to apply to transfers, as well as, to existing players.

I imagine that could be an issue with the possible Dartmouth transfer. It's a little late in the year to be finding a spot in any graduate program.

Right? I mean I'll feel like an ass if it's something personal but I do not feel bad about this.

I would think that just about every program at W&M could take another student since said student wouldn't need an assistant ship.

This would just be free money for the department.

The big thing is was Jack taking a summer course at KU? If he was, transfer rules might apply for eligibility.

I would be shocked if he decided to come back to W&M.
As long as the coaches decided that it wouldn't be disruptive, i would take him back.

Regardless if he was enrolled, Jack was working out/practicing with Kansas, so, I believe if he transfers anywhere else, then he'd have to sit another year before playing, IF the NCAA granted him a 6th year waiver. Kansas has a trip to Italy scheduled and their official 10 day practice session will start soon. Maybe that was the bewitching period for the decision.

Technically, you, also, have to be accepted to the grad program before you can transfer, so, for as quick as the initial Kansas transfer announcement came about, he still had to apply and get accepted to be official. Who knows, it's a tricky situation with the rules. Maybe, someone has a better interpretation, or remembers a previous similar situation and outcome?

Unfortunate, but I believe Jack's college playing days may be done.

RE: 2017 CAA Basketball Transfers - Old tribe - 07-20-2017 12:38 PM

I wouldn't be surprised if KU told him he could transfer there and that a permanent spot on the team was contingent on how he looked in summer practices and workouts. I know he had a concussion and couldn't do much for a few weeks. Maybe the KU coaches told him he'd be better served moving along. KU's done similar things in the past. They will take a guy on scholarship with the understanding that it's only for a year and that they'll have to move on once they can fill the scholarship with a better player. There is a lot of talk that Marvin Begley, the #1 recruit in the 2018 class, is reclassifying and will commit to KU. Some are pointing to that as the reason for Jack's sudden departure.

I doubt he will come back to W&M. We just need to move on and go get that Dartmouth grad. transfer.

RE: 2017 CAA Basketball Transfers - mrjoolius - 07-20-2017 01:57 PM

I'd say if Jack has any interest in coming back and is eligible, you welcome him back into the fold. He is talented, knows the system, and provides welcome depth. I know the players would take him back with no reservations and I'm pretty sure that the coaches could accept it if they had a heart to heart. All that said, I'm pretty sure he ain't coming back.

RE: 2017 CAA Basketball Transfers - mrjoolius - 07-20-2017 02:00 PM

I'm not sure how the typical sit out/transfer rules apply to a grad student. If it is a situation where they wanted to reallocate his scholarship, it would be pretty low if it kept him from moving on. If he simply left the school, as is being reported, then perhaps he is just ready to move on with life. I'm sure he could play pro ball in Europe if he wants to. He may even have job opportunities in his chosen field. Who knows? School starts soon, so I'm sure it will be worked out soon.

I can think of few things more toxic to a team than a player who obviously wishes he was someplace else and, by all appearances, considers his coach, team, and teammates to be second- (or eightieth-) best.

OTOH, I think Cole Harrison would love William & Mary and Williamsburg, and hope he's giving us a hard look.
