This has to hurt: New Mexico snakes New Mexico St's Coach - billybobby777 - 04-11-2017 10:31 AM

Paul Weir had a great first year as a HC at New Mexico St. They went 29-6 and an NCAA tournament. He was recruiting some good 3/4 star players; signed a 4 star recruit out of Orlando. He's young (mid 30's) and was an assistant for Steve Alford at Iowa. NM St had a good one!......Just saw that a couple days before national signing day he left....for in state rival New Mexico. Ouch.

Hurts more considering you get the impression UNM is one of the schools who strongly oppose NMSU in the MWC.

Not only will we not help your cause for conference inclusion, we'll take your coaches. The college way.

I'm assuming that NM St is livid! Also, will the 4 star stay with NM ST now? Will he open up his recruiting to stay home in Orlando to go to UCF? Will he follow his coach to New Mexico?

NM St keeps making the tournament with the WAC autobid, while NM stays home. That probably hurts too.

Even with a new coach NM St will continue to make the tournament. They are by far the strongest sports school in the depleted WAC. They were going to the tournament when Nevada, Utah St, Fresno, Boise, etc were still WAC members.

Grand Canyon would be hard to get past the next season since they are able to go to the 68 field team. GCU is getting to play schools from the power conferences.

True! Looking back, NM St has won the WAC autobid in the 2009-10, 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15, and 2016-17 seasons!

Most of those were under Menzies, who is now at UNLV, and Weir of course is now at New Mexico.

Wonder if NM St will go after Cal St - Bakersfield's head coach?

They have a nice area and a great history. Lou Hensen took them to the final 4 in the 70's and after Illinois, he came out of retirement in the 90's to coach NM St again. I'll never forget the headline, "Hensen takes NM St job for $1 a year"---classy. He really cared about the school he started with. Too little of that stuff these days IMHO. But back to subject, it sounds like they are struggling mightily financially and I don't know what they can pay...

Illinois/New Mexico St are having a Lou Henson Night at the United Center next season.

WAC has a very good threesome with Pistol Pete/Grand Canyon/Bakersfield (NIT Final Four).

NMSU is the poster child for a rich mid major hoops tradition.

They could be down for a season and rebound pretty quickly.

UNM is not keeping NMSU out of the MWC. They do not bring a good market, they have the historically worst FBS program, and haven't won an NCAA Tournament game since 1992. The only thing keeping NMSU out of the MWC is themselves.

Why would they want NMSU over any current or possible teams in the MWC?

I don't know about UNM keeping NMSU out of the MWC....that was someone else who said that. No, NMSU is in an Idaho situation where no one wants them. Can't blame 1 school when the entire MWC, CUSA and SB don't want them. I didn't realize NMSU hasn't won an NCAA game since 1992 though.....doesn't seem right. In fact, I think they've even made a couple sweet 16 runs since then. I'll double check.

Isn't right. It was 1993, 1-1. 1992 was the last Sweet Sixteen run.

If Utah St and San Jose St had magically decided to drop football in the early 2010's, and/or if the MWC had magically decided that it needed 14 football members, then Idaho and NM St would be in the MWC now.

They were simply the very last, bottom two FBS teams in the Mountain/Pacific timezones, and the MWC spots ran out before it was their turn.
