"...“I am surprised and disappointed in the decision,” said Smith in a statement.

I am surprised and disappointed by Smith’s inability to do what needs to be done to succeed as the Tigers' basketball coach...."

...“He’s won everywhere he’s been,” Memphis fans reassured themselves, even though that’s only somewhat true. Smith has been to the NCAA tournament everywhere he’s been, but he hasn’t been to the Sweet 16 — the accepted standard of success at Memphis — since 2005 at Kentucky.

As the year unfolded, it became clear that Smith had no interest in promoting the program. He has assembled a recruiting class that currently ranks 58th in the country. At his end-of-season press conference, Smith said he was focusing the rest of his efforts on junior college players, which is to say, recruiting’s dregs..."

But I'm not sure calkins or Parrish, among other writer types, were in that group. You've actually impressed me in the past months, saluki. If i were you I'd definitely be saying "I told you so" more than you have.

Calkins did. I discussed with him what he finally wrote today a couple weeks into season.

Who gives a flying crap what Caukins says or thinks?

RE: Calkins chimes in - Hoots - 04-05-2017 08:42 PM

He and I had tea in August and told me the same thing.

I did. Not rocket science to see this coming.

If we had only hired Scott Drew.

I went back and read some of the hiring threads and they were quite a few with serious doubts.

Go listen to today's podcast. It's fair and pretty well spells out what Tubby has in front of him.

He's got his son as third assistant instead of a productive recruiter.

He just basically ran off Keelon. Some think that was a good move, some don't but that's what he did. In doing so he cost the program at least one current player and likely two more pretty good future players.

Who's he brining in? A bunch of Jucos? Yeah, that'll work.

"It is for that reasons we are asking for a release from The University of Memphis Men's Basketball program."

'That reasons.' Very eloquent.

I've called into sports radio twice in my life. Once was to ask about robert Doziers recruitment. The other time was the day Tuby was announced I called into Vernon to say "Tubby is a terrible hire, his career is clearly on a downward trajectory, he doesn't recruit well, why would anybody think this is a good hire?"

I have seen nothing to make me change my position

You can be a smart azz but he and I both knew it was the most important hire the University would make in a decade at least. Winning back fan base, recruiting, promotion, all things the University obviously overlooked in hiring Tubby.

This hire affected a tremendous amount of revenue at stake-which is gone and may never again reach the levels of 2013 or 2014.

And where did this prestigious private meeting between you and calkins occur?

That explains it all! They are going to Harvard!

All the distorted beliefs about Tubby's recruiting woes are predicated upon "assumptions" no one knows for sure if he can recruit or not. I'd like to see actual evidence before I blindly make any assumptions. Just my perspective...

No, the comments on Tubby's recruiting are based on the documented recruiting classes had has had since leaving Kentucky over 10 years ago. There's no guessing to it.......... Google it for yourself.

RE: Calkins chimes in - Ttaylor - 04-05-2017 10:02 PM

Saul as the 3rd assistant does bother me. I agree with the fans about giving him Keelon's former position and bring in a kick azz recruiter. One that's freaking relentless and can relate to these kids today like a Coach Norvell, baby!

Take away my points azzwipes!! Many on here post differing opinions but a notorious coward takes away my points for posting my opinions. Taking away my points will not intimidate or stop me from posting. I'm here to discuss my beloved Tigers; I'm not here to kiss azz!
