I thought that ND was in the B1G now (or dies that start next season?)

Either way, the B1G is going to be a force to be reckoned w/ in hockey in the very near future - even more so than it already is.

ND to the B1G starts next year. The B1G championship game at Joe Louis Arena had less that 500 people according to Gopher fans that were there. It goes to campus sites next year. The Michigan's this year were horrible but at least Bucky returned to strength with a new coach. The NCHC tournament at the Target Center gets great UND crowds.

500 people? Wow, the Big Ten hockey thing was a bust. I remember the WCHA drawing sellouts. Also Wisconsin used to draw even with hoops until about 5 years ago, I believe?

Who was the first team out this year?

Also how has Miami been doing in lately? I recall they were a national power with Enrico's "brotherhood" a short while ago but haven't heard much.

Used to casually follow college hockey when I had more time.

BC, Vermont, and Wisconsin were last out by pairwise and it was very close. BC, Wisconsin and BGSU would have made it in with championship games wins. Committees don't decide who gets in. Pairwise ratings solely decides. A committee decides the brackets though, as host teams get placed there and often times local teams with attendance gets preference. UND and Providence will get placed in very friendly venues.

Miami is still young, but finished 7th. Cincinnati has been bidding on regionals because they have been expecting Miami, but that hasnt happened for a few years. WMU almost had a #1 seed, but lost twice in the NCHC tournament.

Pairwise needs to be scrapped yesterday. Any "system" that says UND deserves to get in in, and runner-up Quinnipiac doesn't, is prehistoric and needs to go.

Would think the UND vs UM-Duluth final at Target Center, is about the best the NCHC can ever expect to do.

Both should be added to the Big Ten as hockey affiliates.

would they put North Dakota, Duluth and Minnesota in Fargo? what are the seeds?
Providence in Providence would certainly be favorable. Not bad for a team left for dead earlier in the season

UND is seeded tenth overall. We lost more than ten times to #1 seeds Denver and UMD and nearly #1 WMU. The NCHC was by far the toughest conference in strength as St Cloud and OMaha nearly had losing records bUT their RPI was high.. We beat BC in MSG which knocked them out in the end and Union at their place. We dominated eastern teams. If QU had won more, against good teams, they would have been in. UND was 2nd in the NCHC tounament, needing only to win 1 game to qualify.

Miami's problem is that after our program started to take off, our recruiting started to pick up to the point where we were getting more NHL-caliber players more likely to leave before graduating. When they did, our roster lost a lot of talent while we simultaneously jumped up a level in competition in the NCHC. It's kinda like if a college basketball team that has a lot of one-and-dones moved up to the ACC the season after a bunch of them left, it's hard to reload with more and it takes a while to rebuild with four-year players.

Next season is big for us, we need to get back to the tourney to prove that we're still a relevant program because we're slipping. And we've had such bad luck over the years in regional travel that it's frustrating to see us host so many regionals in our backyard yet make none of them.

RE: Hockey field of 16 set-Penn St makes it for the first time - NoDak - 03-19-2017 10:49 AM

Duluth got the #1 seed in Fargo. They would have to go 6-0 in games against us to get to Chicago.

Prior to the semis, the only game to make it on TV higher than ESPNU (and a lot of them are ESPN3), is North Dakota vs BC on ESPN2.

I don't think I'm going out on a limb here but I'm pretty confident that Air Force is the only team in that has a 100% USA roster.

Minnesota used to take pride in only having Minnesotans on their roster. This year they have a Swede, two Michiganers, a Wisconsinite who went to private school in the Cities, and one Alaskan. They found out they can't win with just Minnesotans, as the last time they won two in a row, shamefully for their fans there was actually North Dakotans on their roster. Rarely are Canadiens part of the team.

UND used to be majority Canadien, but the numbers have been trending down for years and is now at five. Considering that the recruiting jackpot of Winnipeg is just two hours away, that's rather extraordinary. The immediate Grand Forks area now provides much of the talent, as Grand Forks even dominates Minnesota bantam teams now and is a significant DI recruiting hotbed.. Europeans from Slovakia, Finland and Norway are getting more roster spots too.

RE: Hockey field of 16 set-Penn St makes it for the first time - Dr. Isaly von Yinzer - 03-20-2017 10:10 PM

Hockey talent throughout the United States has really changed over the past 15–20 years. There was a time when almost all of the players came from Minnesota, Michigan and Massachusetts. You would occasionally have some kids from New York and Vermont or New Hampshire as well but it was pretty much mostly Minnesota, Michigan and Massachusetts.

This past year, the number one pick in the NHL draft was Auston Matthews and he was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. That's like the top overall baseball pick being born and raised in Fairbanks, Alaska. It's just completely unheard of.

Seth Jones, certainly one of the top young defensemen in the world, is from Dallas, Texas.

More impressively, the city of St. Louis had six kids picked in the first two rounds. Again, that would not have happened in a generation ago. Pittsburgh is another place that never formerly produced NHL talent but now does just about every year. There's even a name for it: the Lemieux effect. The Philly area is similarly growing as the Flyers have really done a good job of cultivating that area.

And I think the most overlooked story in hockey development is all of the players coming out of California – especially Southern California. Again, pretty much every draft now there's a kid or two from Anaheim or LA or somewhere else. That would not have happened pre-Gretzky.

Gary Bettman has taken a lot of shitt over the years for his Sunbelt expansion and truthfully not all of it was undeserved. The NHL expanded too aggressively in too short a period of time in the 90's and it definitely hurt the game. However, if you're being fair and objective, the evidence is very clear that at the end of the day his plan basically worked and USA hockey is much better for it.

I know people are surprised to read that and frankly I am surprised to write it. I was as critical of it as anyone. However, just look at the evidence of how much the game has grown – especially in nontraditional markets – and it's pretty clear that it mostly worked.

Phoenix is still not where it should be and neither is Miami. However, Anaheim is rock solid and LA is the same. Who can find fault with what has happened in Dallas or Nashville or Tampa? Nobody because it has clearly worked in all of those places.

People are loathe to admit it because he is so hateable and he was so aggressive/caustic, but he's been vindicated - which is why he is still in power all these years later.

American hockey is so much better now than it was 20 years ago, it's not even funny. We are now a threat to win the World Junior Tournament every single year and Canada now sees the United States, not Russia, as their primary rival. That was unimaginable even 10 years ago.

You will soon see that start to show up at the NHL level and in the Olympics, World Cup, etc. The United States has arrived as a world hockey power and it is only going to get stronger going forward.

That''s a good and fair post ..... no doubt so much of our present hockey talent comes from the South. I do think some southern franchises should be given up (namely, Carolina and Florida) because every market is unique and it's simply not going to work in EVERY southern market. But it has worked many places in the South.

Still plenty of other stuff to criticize Bettman for. For one, I see he's trying a rather aggressive shake-down of the city of Calgary for a new arena for the Flames. Ugh, gross ........ but he's not the only commissioner to engage in that type of behavior.

RE: Hockey field of 16 set-Penn St makes it for the first time - MplsBison - 03-21-2017 08:39 AM

Well, it's one thing to say that a player was born in Arizona or Texas or Georgia ... but the likely fact of the matter is that this player was funneled into a system of traveling teams that play across the country almost year round, from an early age.

And that feeds into what is called "Juniors" hockey, for 16-21 year olds. A lot of those teams are in the northern US and Canada, though the NAHL has a southern division. But the USHL (the top US league) teams are all well above the Mason-Dixon line.

Horse, then cart, my friend.

UND must dispatch BU and UM-Duluth must deal with Ohio State.

There is but one North Dakota game on the schedule and it ... (wait for it) ... S2BU.
