Future of the CAA Tournament - Seahawk Nation 08 - 03-15-2017 03:23 PM

Looks like a new arena is a "go" in Virginia Beach, and though it's pure speculation at this time, it could conceivably be a contender to host the CAA Tournament down the road.
I thought North Charleston was a perfect location for this 3-year run, but we know there's a chance it gets moved by the time 2020 comes around. Knowing this, if it does NOT go back to North Charleston beyond 2019....is Virginia Beach viable? What other cities do you think seem likely to submit bids?

I know that would make CG happy! Same type drive for me, VB is a decent location.

Given the choices, I like it. Moving it to Baltimore to placate northern schools who have no interest in their basketball programs was a mistake. VB is close enough for the Tribe to bring a very good crowd and close enough for UNCW and Elon to travel as well. Still a bit of a stretch for CofC though.

VB and Charleston are about the same trip. One is north and the other is south. Rotating between the two would be fine with me

Shorter drive to VB from Raleigh, so that would be nice. Charleston is one of my favorite cities though.

How in the world do you fix crappy fan bases? We could have the tournament AT Northeastern and they wouldn't get 1,000 of their own fans to the game.

Towson might have brought 200 fans. That game had maybe 1000 or so. And that was in the first half.
CofC hasn't traveled well to outside conference tourneys in the past few years. The 3 years the tourney was in Baltimore, we didn't bring more than a couple hundred. Same in Asheville when they first had it in the SoCon. Chattanooga was even worse.
The year we beat Davidson and Steph Curry in the SoCon semifinals, we had to play Chattanooga in basically a road game in the finals, playing our 4th game in 4 days because they went by division.
Chattanooga won their division at 11-9 and 15-16 overall, while CofC finished 15-5 and 23-7; we had to play an extra game because we were 3rd in our division; while Chattanooga had the tourney on their home court. They had it one year in Charlotte, thinking Curry was gonna come back, and it backfired on them.

Some other tournaments have moved to a format where each of the rounds are at the home arena of the higher seeded team. That's one way to deal with it.

Don't like that format for the CAA. It works for smaller leagues where a small gym would be fine, but you could never have fit all the Charleston-UNCW fans from this year's title game in Trask.

OK. Now you're just talking out of your arse.
When we played the season openers vs BU at the Boston Garden the last few years, we easily had 600 plus at the games, students and alumni. A far cry from what BU had.
It will never happen, but we would easily top 1,000. Especially a semi-final or championship game.
The Garden is a quick 10 minute trolley/subway ride from campus.
Keep the tourney in the little southern towns. I could care less. We can win anywhere.
I'd like to see how many southern fans would make the trek up to Boston, especially if their teams underachieved in the regular season. Not many would be my guess.
But like I said, it will never happen.

Actually, I think your point is well taken.
Frankly, while there was a good crowd in the CAA tournament final game, the gym was only half full this year. And that was with the top two seeded teams playing in the IDEAL place for those particular teams.

If the Southern Conference ever leaves Asheville, NC, it is an excellent place for a mid-major tournament. The arena seats around 6,000 fans and once you park, you can walk to dozens of restaurants.
