Grad transfer alert: W&M big man Jack Whitman told ESPN he will transfer for final year. Averaged 10 & 5 this season. Eligible immediately.

Didn't see this here. Apologies for the error with Whitman's first name. Not sure how to edit that.

I had a feeling this was coming. Something was not right this year with the Tribe. Schlotman and Whitman not staying for their senior year. Tribe is going to need some new bigs.

That's a bridge in Philly.

What the heck??? Why?

RE: Walt Whitman to transfer - TribePride91 - 03-14-2017 07:21 PM

This is so disappointing.

Wow. That was somewhat unexpected. Makes the need for a big man signing even more important.

This makes me very sad.

Schlotman makes sense. I believe he got a good job offer he didn't want to pass up, and he never really got a lot of minutes.

This one is a schocker.

Ugh. This is pretty surprising, but have to wonder if Nathan taking his starting position Kate in the season is at play here.

This is a BIG blow.

I wonder where he'll wind up. I don't see any big basketball schools taking him; he's a solid mid major big man, but not P6 level. Maybe he'll go closer to home or something?

I'm just stunned. So much for two big men at the same time next year. If we have two big men on the team it'll be a coup.

Very disappointing, when you're a key part of a program, and you choose to use a final eligibility year, elsewhere.

Either:
1) Your graduate plans truly are in a program W&M doesn't offer and you rightfully want to use your skills to get it paid for, or
2) You believe you have the potential to play in the NBA and want a larger stage, or
3) You simply don't feel a strong enough connection with your remaining teammates, coaching staff, and school, after your original recruiting classmates are finished.

Not sure there's a right way to announce you're leaving, but a general announcement to ESPN seems to rule out #1, and #2 isn't viable. If #3, then best for all, so, no chemistry issues next year.

Had no doubt Jack would have been a captain next year, especially with the growth and effort he showed this year.

Staff has their work cut out.

90.... I know that post from him was frustrating, but that was an unnecessary low blow.

RE: Walt Whitman to transfer - Naptown Tribe - 03-14-2017 08:19 PM

Wow ... definitely surprising and a big blow ... something is amiss for sure ... need to find 1-2 bigs somehow now ... this one hurts ... Tony kept talking about how much Jack improved last summer after finally being healthy and was excited to see how much more he kept improving. ... this sucks ... the staff is gonna have to pull a rabbit out of a hat now.

What the hell is this?

I guess it's better than Nathan transferring

That sucks. Even if he lost the starting job, I can't imagine it is that big of a deal when both of our bigs pretty much get 20 minutes each game.

This one really hurts because there were a lot of games that I felt like Whitman was the only player on the court showing any energy/life. Now my bleak expectations for next season became bleaker...

Don't think a loss is ever better or worse, whether Hunter or Jack, or anyone. They're still losses.

So, when Knight gets into foul trouble next year do we implement a 5 guard offense?....

RE: Walt Whitman to transfer - tribeintexas - 03-14-2017 08:49 PM

This is not good at this stage of recruiting process. If Jack intended to transfer, he should have told the coaches earlier. It is his scholarship so there is nothing we can blame him for. Like many others, I was looking forward to him and Nathan playing together next year.

Well, come on down Taylor Bruninga and Greg Calixte. There's immediate playing time to be had.
