The AAC should throw life vests to Air Force and Colorado State and call it a day.

Playing better teams in better time zones would help them out.

Well with the success we are having on the MW Digital Network (see my post on the MW board in the inactive area), we have been making a profit now...although very little but with the year over year increase in viewership, that'll put more revenue from the MWDN broadcasts.
If we put the higher profile games on the MWDN that give a bigger increase in views for us.

I think the AD's are seeing we are losing more $$ in attendance with the very late start times than what little the $1 million in TV gives the MW schools.

That might be true that ticket sales would largely offset the revenue loss. Plus, theres no reason the MW couldn't sell a small package of games to ESPN at agreeable start times, a small package to CBS with agreeable start times--and run the rest through local TV deals and the digital network. That would likely raise at least half what the old contract was worth. The local deals would likely be enough to at least offset most all of the production costs and MWDN costs. The digital ad sales would be pure profit. It might be revenue positive on the whole if done right.

Depending on what maybe NBCSN or BeIN Sports may offer the MW, I can see that being a possibility of selling a games independently to national producers. I guess we'll see when that time comes, 3 years is pretty long and a lot a changes will have been made in the digital world.

It's the opposite direction to the MAC

The money is hardly make or break at G5 level. CUSA and SBC barely get anything, and the MAC sold their soul. CBS is obviously not going to pay the AAC or MWC much. It will be interesting to see what the MWC decides to do. Will they build a digital network again? Partner with somebody like Yahoo or Google or Facebook? Is a partnership with the P12N possible.

The AAC folks are delusional if they think they will get an increase. G5 schools are going to have to make a call on whether it's worth a few $100K to have crazy hours. If you lose 20K butts in seats you are probably losing $500K in gate. That is the calculus for 8:45pm kickoffs on Tuesday night.

What are you talking about? We have a digital network built up already. http://www.themw.com/page/watch-live

The AAC will get a raise. The AAC numbers aren't anything like CUSA's numbers and are much higher than even the MW numbers. There is a difference.

What happened to the MTN? Equipment, studio, trucks etc.
Can the MTN tv network be brought back?
Cheers!

That was owned by CBS I believe. As for restarting the Mtn (CBS shut it down), there is no way to get the access needed with cable and sat companies. We are better off where we are now with our digital network and have spent I good deal of money investing in it.

RE: mwc to consider cutting the cord - arkstfan - 03-11-2017 09:09 PM

Makes sense to me.

I'm fine with a limited slate of weeknights. AState plays one weeknight game at home and one on the road (chance Miami could move to a Friday) and that's just enough to get a bit of exposure without putting a big dent in attendance.

But there aren't many schools even in the P5 who make more off TV than they make from attendance, donations, and sponsorships and sponsorships and donations tend to track with attendance.

Online is growing and as I say, if my 84 year old father can handle using Roku to watch then anyone can. I've not seen more recent stats but as of a few years ago people under 18 were doing a majority of their online using mobile devices and for minorities mobile usage represented about 50% more of their online activities than white teens. If you are looking to get in front of potential students and potential student-athletes, accessibility on mobile devices is critical.

RE: mwc to consider cutting the cord - billybobby777 - 03-11-2017 10:37 PM

The MWC isn't getting much exposure from CBS-SN. The entire reason they left ESPN in 2005 was because they didn't want to play on weeknights. So CBS-SN AND weeknight games? They are better off losing their tv pennies and playing football on Saturdays and basketball at decent hours on the Internet or on a local network. Sell the big games like Florida St at Boise or Arkansas at Colorado St to ESPN if possible I guess...
Cheers!

Or the projected TV numbers aren't coming back at clip that would indicate that anything more than current money is going to happen.

Since the MWC is now the entry FBS conference for the west they don't need TV money to keep their conference secured.

The TV rat race in the east between the MAC, CUSA and SBC had been a scramble over TV dollars. Programs left the MAC (Marshall, UCF) and the SBC for CUSA and the TV money that has come with it. Now its the MAC that is off limits because they have the TV dough when SBC/CUSA don't have it.

The 1 million dollars is increasingly less significant when almost every budget in FBS is 30 million. CUSA could do better by splitting to save on travel costs and increase ticket revenue with better rivalries.

The AAC will get a raise? It may be enough to keep the AAC together and prevent schools moving to the Big East and putting football in the MAC but its not like the programs in the conference on 50 million dollar average budgets are going to get rich on an extra 1-2 million dollars.

Ask yourself this are you better with the following:

48 million dollar budget and a 4 million dollar a year TV deal.

OR

28 million dollar budget and a 1 million dollar a year TV deal.

AAC has a little more TV money but spends FAR more.

A Couple of Hundred Grand on the Basketball side only!

That is delusional if you think that you will get a huge raise. Your Conferences Basketball is what got you the money you got now. I just do not see it.

Even if you add Air Force(They are a Package Deal with the other Front Range Schools. Have fun with Wyoming), it does NOT help you at all and Army does NOTHING!

You AAC Fanboys need to take a Nap, then need to be slapped around, then come back to these forms with some common sense07-coffee307-coffee307-coffee307-coffee307-coffee3

They don't look at it that way. Those schools look at it in terms of getting an invite to a P5. That's not going to happen if they downsize into a MAC budget.

Basketball drives the bus? Lol. Ok. That's your example of common sense? Moving on....

Look, this isnt rocket science. It's just ratings. Why do you think the MAC got what they did? Thier mid week games were attracting enough people to be valuable. They signed that new deal after NIU had gone on thier run and thier mid-week games were often attracting a million viewers. The MAC didn't get that money because of thier Saturday ratings or basketball--it was strictly on the basis of those mid-week games and thier willingness to play a crap load of them.

The AAC plays when they ask and draws solid audiences----often even on Saturdays. The main reason the AAC will get a nice raise is they are drawing far more people than anyone thought they would. It's simple as that. Will the raise be "huge". Probably on a percentage basis it will be huge. In real dollars--probably not. I suspect the AAC ends up around 4-6 million a team. Significantly better than the rest of the G5---but still miles and miles from the P5.

Agree. I don't see the advantage of the crazy start times just to make about $200K a year. Two or three years is a long time for things to change, but the trend will certainly continue toward unconventional methods of selling your product.
