I know people like to knock them here but they really are out of place in the G5. Put them in the ACC & give them the same bump Louisville got & they could be top 4 or 5. Terry, Cincinnati & USF are getting the same BE exit fees that UCONN is getting. So unless they are bringing in $30-$40 million on subsidies then I don't think that's right. RE: NCAA Division I-FBS Athletic Department Revenues - CollegeCard - 03-11-2017 01:05 PM My question, how is UC only 9th in the AAC? Aren't they top 5 in the AAC in basketball and football attendance? I live in Cincinnati and I'm trying to think of the main reason why they'd be below some of the AAC schools that don't draw flies for at least 1 of the 2 major sports. This is the article I was referring to: "The University of Connecticut spent $27.2 million last year subsidizing its sports teams and programs – the third highest in the nation among public schools with Division 1 sports teams. Only Rutgers University and James Madison University subsidized athletics more, a review released Monday by the Chronicle of Higher Education found. USA Today routinely ranks UConn's subsidies among the highest in the nation." http://www.courant.com/sports/uconn-huskies/hc-uconn-sports-subsidies-1117-20151116-story.html RE: NCAA Division I-FBS Athletic Department Revenues - georgia_tech_swagger - 03-11-2017 03:54 PM (03-11-2017 12:08 AM)EnterSandman Wrote: Atlantic Coast Conference A heady mix of an ATROCIOUS athletic director, the mistaken de-emphasis of the Alexander-Tharpe Fund, a terrible hoops coach, and a fan base nervous about the football program. All I know is that a big chunk of that UConn athletic budget is from exit fees/subsidies, which is not sustainable long term nor admirable. If you look at the numbers you will see that Virginia has about a 15% subsidy & NC, VT & GT has about a 10% subsidy. Meanwhile Cincinnati & USF has a 44% & 47% subsidy. So even if you cut UCONN subsidy in half they drop to the bottom of the ACC but still within about $5million of WF while on AAC $. Cincinnati & USF on the other hand are making the same amount on BE exit fees & subsidizing more than UCONN but are trailing well behind them in revenue, by these numbers. They are making around $9 million more on Rights/Licensing than Cincy & USF & about $5 million under what P5 makes on the low end. I have to remain impressed with UCONN here. 32 North Carolina ACC $89,128,256 $89,080,843 $9,040,407 10.14 40 Virginia Tech ACC $80,230,095 $77,679,721 $8,127,300 10.13 42 Georgia Tech ACC $77,202,758 $74,979,077 $7,271,782 9.42 54 Cincinnati AAC $52,536,185 $51,717,370 $23,182,129 44.13 59 South Fla AAC $45,479,012 $46,860,838 $21,774,572 47.88 (The numbers in this link are from 2015.) I have mentioned this several times. The entire subsidy at UNC is a gift to the University by the Rams Club which covers all of the tution/academic expenses for every athlete on campus. This allows the university to utilize a like amount of money in other areas. Because of this gift the Rams Club is granted certain "privileges". One could say that Stanford's entire athletic budget is a subsidy, as it is funded by an athletic endowment and is not a budget line item. RE: NCAA Division I-FBS Athletic Department Revenues - nzmorange - 03-14-2017 07:57 PM It will be interesting to see where SU lands after the sanction wears off. RE: NCAA Division I-FBS Athletic Department Revenues - JHG722 - 03-15-2017 01:06 AM Just want to point out that Temple has the lowest percentage subsidized athletic department of any state school outside of the P5 at ~25% which is in-line with ASU, and not terribly far off from Colorado. I'm not sure about every private school in the G5, but as far as I know, Tulsa and SMU are the only schools with lower percentage subsidized athletic departments (yes, Tulane is subsidized more than we are at ~38%). New Mexico is 2nd at just over 26%. After them is Boise at just over 28%. Basketball attendance dropped from 430,000 to 370,000, but did return to 430,000 for 2016-17. Football attendance is harder to compare because we played one home game at MetLife versus Notre Dame this year, but was definitely better in 2016-17 than 2015-16. |
