For our market size, that is WAY too many programs for us to compete with for people's money and mindshare. I have always prayed for FCC's failure, for that reason alone. That goes double for the Bengals, since in addition to playing one of our revenue sports, they are also buttholes.
Just my opinion. Why do UC fans always have this conversation? I never see/hear Eggs fans discussing this topic. FCC fans are not having this discussion. If anything, Eggs fans/admin do an excellent job elevating their respective teams. They go out and say we are going to own the local market, regardless if UC or the Reds or Bungles are here. Their admin tries to gain and steal away as much of the market share as possible. They do not see Reds and Bungles support as a hindrance, but a challenge as to how do we take some of their support away.
Consistent winning has a lot to do with helping our cause. From the list above, NKU, Miami and HS Fball have minimal if no affect on UC athletics. Eggs is only one season with bball. They have a smaller fanbase. However, UC needs to take as many casual fans as possible, away from Eggs in that one season. As for Reds, Bungle and FCC - the admin needs to try and take away as much ad / corp support as possible. This means going out and establishing relationships and not doing business as usual. Looks at it as an opportunity and not a roadblock.

Interesting perspective. And stepping back from the casual fans, UC certainly has enough of a tri-state alumni base, faculty/staff, and student population to fill 12,012 seats all season for basketball and keep Nippert full six times a year.
We've witnessed solid growth in attendance over the past decade and with student engagement at a record high level I believe many more who stay in the metro after graduation will buy tickets and keep coming back.
Among the locals, the Bengals may have the most to worry about: highest prices, a mediocre game day experience and a poor performing team. Compare their P.R. with FCC for a real study in contrast.

Football.
XU and UC basketball doesn't compete directly against the Bengals or high school football, UC football does. They are both played during the same time of year-- assuming UC plays on Saturdays, the games are one day apart (Friday and then Sunday).
Most people don't have the time, energy and often money to watch all three. Some might be able to do two out of three. Many do only one.

Just did a quick Twitter search for MLS expansion. No real news yet, but lots of Big12-esque expansion rumors. AND, quite beautifully, one of the most cited Tweets by followers of Sacramento and Nashville was one from no other than MSMoose. It also may have been an MSMoose parody account. Regardless, it's beautiful.

And very disappointing. The Miami ownership has been a shitshow, and Miami (as a city) is awful at supporting pro teams. If MLS holds form, they'll award teams to Nashville and Detroit.

Noticed Moose has recently re-appeared with more pearls of wisdom about conference realignment. Some true believers remain mesmerized. If nothing else, it's cheap entertainment from a safe distance.

Not a plan.
Try winning some games instead--do that before pumping zillions into facilities. UC FB is the classic example of cart before the horse.
It's the same thing with MBB....huge arena, more luxury boxes, etc., but if you don't put a good product on the floor, it's wasted $$$$.
A smart AD would put a ton of $$ into hiring a proven winner as coach, establishing the program, THEN improving the facilities.

It's this type of thinking in the late 90's and early 2000's that would have permanently relegated us to Conference USA. Take a few lessons from your more positive yin-yang counterpart and get on this train.

I enjoyed our time in the Big East but would we really be in any different shape right now if we'd stayed in CUSA? There is a good chance we'd have gotten "called up" to the AAC anyway. We wouldn't have the memories of the Orange Bowl or Sugar Bowl seasons but the trajectory going forward would be roughly the same.

Sure because "proven winners" are dying to take jobs at places with inferior outdated facilities. That way they don't have to waste time showing recruits around to see how good it would be to play here. Instead they can just focus on coaching up all the kids no schools with nice facilities would offer.

No it would't It would be a ton different.
The lead up to the BE was the reason Goin and the BOT undertook capital improvement projects the size and scope of which exceeded the GDP of small nation states.
If we had just resigned ourselves to C-USA, we'd likely still be sitting there and not the AAC. And the facilities would be crap not to mention the campus would still look like a commuter school.
As bad as things seem, they could be far worse. They were far worse for those who remember the bad old days where you could walk into a crumbling Nippert without a ticket and with a case of beer on your shoulder since nobody watched gates.
The downturn now is due only to one historically bad hire that revolved around the malfeasance of an AD refusing to do a coaching search and instead hiring a buddy over the phone who was about to get fired from Lubbock State.

This really hits the nail on the head. People thought we bit off more than we could chew when spent what we did on athletics to get into the Big East but can't make butter with a toothpick and so we did what we had to do to get the invite. It was the right thing to do. I know right now it may look like it was all for not, and many think we get the P5 invite when pigs fly, but I say you can't judge a book by its cover. We just need to get into a spot where we can say to a P5, you scratch my back and I scratch your back. When this happens, its all gravy from there.
