Tell me again about Jeff Loria?

Catchy article title, but not necessarily the end conclusion. And the writer is not an economist and his logic is being questioned (fairly) in the comments section.

If anyone was losing money in the MLS, owners wouldn't be scrambling to get a piece of the action. The author compares MLS to European leagues and simply uses that comparison to trash the league. The problem with that approach is if you look at the top professional sports leagues in Europe, soccer rules the roost. The most profitable non-soccer league in Europe is the Top 14 rugby league in France. I hadn't heard of it until I looked it up just now. It is the 10th biggest pro sports league, with the 9 ahead of it all soccer leagues Unlike in Europe, soccer has serious competition here in the states, including four of the top five grossing professional sports leagues in the world. That doesn't consider collegiate athletics, either.

The conclusion I get from this article is the MLS is still profitable, but not as profitable as the premier league. OK.

Were there any P/L statements mentioned in the article?

Not specifically. A couple of noted economists who have published books specifically about soccer or other sports leagues have questioned why businessmen are rushing to get a spot on the MLS train but fail to specifically prove their assertion.

I'm thinking FCC may sellout Nippert for the first time. [Image: DGu4j7EXYAIrbVi?format=jpg&name=large]

I'd be shocked if they dont. Even I want a ticket to this game.

Didn't they sell out the Crystal Palace game last year?

Yes. There isnt any seats available as of this morning; so Id expect an announced sell out at some point.

I thought the Crystal Palace game was 35,000, which is not a Nippert sellout right?

Since there is more GA seats at FCC games than UC football, they can't beat the old record.. it will be like 33.5 or 34k total.. uber impressive that even with website being down for 7 or 8 hours total, and massive connection issues.. the game basically sold out in 10 hours

I was told that Crystal Palace last year took nearly a month to sell out. This happened in around half a day, AND it includes a period where the ticketing service went down due to too much site traffic. Thats absolutely wild!

I've asked this before but I wonder how the TV numbers are for FCC. Seems like MLS is more worried about those than attendance. Really hope if FCC gets into the MLS that the games will still be broadcast on local stations instead of FS Ohio or whatever.

unfortunately this game will NOT be on ESPN, but I could see a Fox Sports 1 or NBCSN pick it up..

The game v Chicago drew a very comparable crowd to an MLS game on ESPN

I'm a huge FCC fan - season ticket holder since day 1 - but I have a really hard time believing this game is already sold out. I'm thinking their ticketing system is acting buggy but I hope I'm wrong

They just officially announced it, it's a sellout!

They'll never beat a Nippert sell-out because they don't sell as many GA tickets as there are seats & they don't sell student section tickets.

RE: Nippert Defilement - Saw it Tonight - BeerCat - 08-09-2017 06:43 PM

Pretty crazy.

From Pat Brennan's twitter:

Note on @fccincinnati sellout: Season tix holders participated in presale at rate > 100 percent (people w/ 4 seats bought more than 4).

RE: Nippert Defilement - Saw it Tonight - Section 200 - 08-09-2017 08:12 PM

MLS bound for sure now? Wonder if they win this tournament, will they buy better players? Seems you can pick up new players at any time. I assume Mitch is gone after this year for MLS?

Here's a link to a WCPO article discussing stadium financing.

FC Cincinnati wants to make a deal with taxpayers. So what would ...

Some statements from economic professors and rebuttals from Jeff Berding, along with some profiles of local business that has greatly benefited from FC Cincinnati's presence. Pretty fair look at the situation.
