'Runner baseball 2017 - RunnerBall - 02-23-2017 01:44 PM

I'll just plant this thread, give it a tiny bit of water, and see if it grows....with other lurkers chipping in.

After four games, we're at 2-2 with both wins coming from what I'd term as gritty performances. Metzgar still playing great.
Two things I've seen so far:
-Beard is making a point to spread playing time to the freshmen and newer guys, which I like right now. Different approach from what Mac did last year.
-Also.....still very early, but we MAY finally have a closer in Dewsnap. So far so good. It would be nice to have a bullpen.

Currently mobile....but not necessarily upwardly.

2 of 3 from BYU...encouraging play in the wins that I saw anyway. The loss was a festival of errors. As ine other person mentioned, "Carter and Jones dont have great stuff, but know how to pitch."
This team looks like it is fairly mature and poised for being such a young team overall.

RB...It appears that CSUB is a little thin in the pitching department, I see that Steven Gee & Alec Daily are on the roster listed as red shirt juniors, what is the status of those two? In 2015 Gee had a 2.55 ERA in 77 innings and started a regional game against UCLA, the Runners could use him...

RE: 'Runner baseball 2017 - RunnerBall - 04-05-2017 11:50 AM

Alright...welcome to the boards, Flyn! Havent heard from you in a while....I kind of gave up on the old CSUB boards. Im trying to get CPSLO here too. Now we have a reason to post in this board.

Yes, the pitching appears good, but inconsistent. Carter looks good, Moten, Jones and Hanssen look skilled but vary from outing to outing.
Not sure about Gee and Daily. I saw Daily the other day ans WAS wondering whats up with him.

And so, on the heels of our pitching discussion, Carter goes out and tosses a shutout (albeit one over a mediocre Chicago St team) But, nice, none the less.

Yes! Excellent game by Carter, looking at the batting averages of the starting line up of the Runners they should score more than 3 runs a game; but, a win is a win. They have started out in a pretty big hole in WAC play hopefully, they can recover...

RE: 'Runner baseball 2017 - flynhome - 04-09-2017 10:55 AM

According to this mornings statistics Runners have a team .311 batting avg. & a .390 on base%; apparently, this means nothing if you can't pitch or field. I see the Runners at the bottom 1/3 of the WAC, or maybe the very bottom.
Some of the responsibility for the poor performance of baseball and softball (which I will address in another thread) belongs to the athletic administration. The failure to make a timely hire of a head baseball coach after Coach Kernen departed and the emergency hiring of Macaluso days before fall baseball started had to hurt recruiting. They had at least two very qualified candidates
had they not delayed the hiring so, they were stuck with Macaluso who obviously was a mistake. I think it is difficult to recruit kids to CSUB if they have an opportunity to go to Santa Barbara, Cal Poly, or UCLA; however, Kernen & Robinson seemed to find quality players...

RE: 'Runner baseball 2017 - RunnerBall - 04-09-2017 12:58 PM

Bats waking up in Chicago, 6-1 in the 3rd. Charles got the start for the 'Runners. Cant hurt as pitching hasnt been up to par so far his season. I saw him pitch in Bako and thought he could used some work and polishing, but looked pretty good.

Regarding Macaluso, yah, he had his issues. But, I don't think he was an emergency hire. He was brought in as a coach the previous year, and many figured him as the heir apparent to Kernen. Now, WHY he had the issues that I understand he had apparently weren't seen, I don't know the answer to that.

RE: 'Runner baseball 2017 - flynhome - 04-09-2017 03:09 PM

Runners win big today, I guess its a crap shoot as to which Runner team will show up game to game...

I was trying to make two points regarding the Macaluso hire...1. The administration waited so long to announce a head coach hire it hurt recruiting..
2. By waiting so long they lost more qualified assistant & one head coach. Refer back to the old CSUB Board "Head Coaching Search" and to the link to the Big West Board. According to Kendall Rogers, Jason Dietrich, Fullerton pitching coach, Jason Twohig, CSUN Asst. Coach, and Steve Bieser, now head coach at the University of Missouri of the SEC pulled their applications. The exact reason is not known; however, CSUB drug their feet into late August when it was only a few weeks until fall ball started and these coaches were committed to their respective programs. If they intended to hire Macaluso all along they should have done it in June. Macaluso WAS NOT the most qualified. Runner baseball needs a young energetic coach that can relate to the kids and recruit.

Yah, vaguely remember, but did recall good pool of candidates.
And, wondering what the last straw with Mac was. I knew there were issues last season, but not sure if it was some other specific last fall that caused the axe to fall. I DO understand the kids really like Beard, so we'll see how that goes.

Currently mobile....but not necessarily upwardly.

I also have heard that the players DO like Beard. Ziggy better get his head out and make a decision early on a head coach, there are a lot of big holes to fill for 2018.

Just thought of this today. Im hoping......that due to basketball's recent success, baseball doesnt become neglected. Remember back when baseball was started, many/most thought, due to nature of baseball, that was the sport where CSUB would/could make their name (first). And, it DID pretty much transpire that way. Hoping that basketball's success doesnt take focus off a good program. Im not saying I think it will happen, but I could see it if fans arent vigilant. And, that's no dig to MBB congrats on their success. Just saying baseball better stay vocal with the A Dept.

Baseball will draw if they put a winning product on the field...Will the athletic administration give them the resources to do that is the question.

RE: 'Runner baseball 2017 - RunnerBall - 04-10-2017 01:59 PM

Just saw from CSUB Athletics tweet that Ryan Grotjohn is 5th in the nation in hitting with .423 average.

Nimmo starting tonight vrs CSUN.

Currently mobile....at the San Luis coast.

RE: 'Runner baseball 2017 - RunnerBall - 04-12-2017 12:59 PM

I hear Nimmo pitched pretty well per Jeff Evans' article, and there were no errors.

Also, we finally got that new pressbox. Looks good in the photos (couldnt make the game, we're at the coast)

Currently mobile....at the San Luis coast.

Press box had been promised every year for the last 5 years...

Good news is, Runners playing well overall right now. If they hang around close enough, they have a habit of coming back late and hitting ell with 2 outs in inning. Still three hitters in top 50 in the nation. Carter is throwing well, and we appear to have our programs first-ever real closer in Dewsnap.

The bad is...last I checked, the WAC Conference is dead last in conference RPI! Geezzz....I knew it was poor this year, but dead last??!!

Dewsnap is awesome. I love watching him pitch. I've been updating in the general WAC baseball thread.

Well GCU certainly isn't to blame for that, it has a lot to do with the bottom of the conference that did terribly out of conference against terrible teams.
