I think the 1 thing- it was a brutal matchup for the Dodgers. I mean, a lot of righty batters going up against a team with 3 lefty starters- and 1 righty who was putrid in the World Series.... Then only 2 righty relievers he trusted at all with those righties- Maeda and Morrow. And he ran those 2 into the ground.

Forget the city, what about Astros fans? There's no 30-for-30 like the Red Sox, Cubs and Cleveland but Astros fans have had some, tough, tough breaks over the years. The Astros won three playoff series before this season, were 1-5 with a chance to go to the World Series and 1-8 in elimination games, not including the famous game against the Mets in 1986.

It feels like a jinx is over.

By city I also mean Astros fans given how they mostly live in the Houston area, but yeah you're right. The Killer B's (as a Cardinals fan I'm happy for Beltran) were awesome and you guys have had some great players and teams over the years, sometimes it just doesn't come together until the right mix emerges. Reminds me of my Blues for hockey, now it's just time for us to win it all.

Congrats to the Astros newest #1 fan: flyingswoosh

Yay I win everything. It felt nice to wake up in a world where the Dodgers still don't have a title in recent memory.

Only got to watch the last few innings of the game and it was quite intense. Boy, Reddick was freaking awful. He really wanted to stick it to the Dodgers and did quite the oppposite

not as bad as Yu Darvish

This site- The Baseball Guage has a cWPA- championship wins probability added. Similar to the WPA- but it's expressed in terms of winning the series....

Springer had the #10 WS of all time in this. Above him were guys like Jack Morris 1991, Madbum 2014, David Freese 2011, Sandy Koufax 1965. Amazing when you factor in game 1 where he was 0-4 with 4 k's.

Darvish had the 10th worst WS of all time in this.

Just so sad. I'm really cut up about it

I'm sure you are. Sure it makes you nostalgic to see Madbum on the top part of the list.

Definitely does. Although I see 2002 Livan sharing Darvish's section of the list. I really don't remember his performance (or lack thereof). I wasn't very young, but hardly old either. Luckily I don't have to dwell on it

RE: 2017 MLB Season Thread - flyingswoosh - 11-02-2017 10:59 AM

My concern for next season is that the Dodgers are going to be right back at it in October. I mean, who's going to challenge them? The Nats should still be very good, but I can trust them only so much. The Cubs have some decisions to make and the Dbacks really aren't good enough to challenge the Dodgers. Not to mention the latter apparently has 80 million to spend on an already great team. Doesn't make me feel good

looking on BR- you're lucky you don't remember
game 3- 5 runs in 3.2 innings. 5 walks.
game 7- 4 runs in 2 innings. 4 more walks.

yeah that sounds really bad.

I hope you're right, and I think it's reasonable to expect the Dodgers to go after a couple of high performing free agents. They'll even be able to do so while reducing payroll! (Re the $80MM, that's a bit of an exaggeration because it includes Darvish's $11MM salary of which they obviously only paid a portion.) ETA: I didn't realize Forsythe, at $9MM, has a club option. I think they'll exercise it...

I expect the roster to be better next year, so it'll take underperformance and/or injuries for Dodgers to drop off.

RE: 2017 MLB Season Thread - stever20 - 11-03-2017 11:01 PM

Dodgers still have a lot of dead weight in '18. Adrian Gonzalez with 22.36 million. Brandon McCarthy who was radioactive in the World Series- 11.5 million. Scott Kazmir 17.67 million.

according to BR they're at 202 million right now. So that number is already over the luxury tax. So they will have go pay I guess 20% more than anything they sign. So a guy for 10 million is now 12 million. (might be more as not sure where they are on the number of times offender. IF it's 3 times it's 50%). That's going to get prohibitive.

After doing a little reading on this, I think it's more likely the Dodgers go after at most one free agent and leverage organizational depth to bring in others. I still think they want to shore up the outfield (Left or Center) and starting pitching. On the trade block: Alex Wood, Joc Pederson probably headline. But I could also see them trading Forsythe, moving Taylor to 2nd, and looking at 2 new outfielders. And there's no way they'll let a luxury tax get in the way of going after Otani (if the league and MLBPA can get that mess untangled).
