Pretty intense game.

Nats with the right guys up in the 9th.....

If Harper makes out here, there's going to be a lot of controversy surrounding that replay. Does MLB needs to change the rules about tag plays when a player comes off the bag for a split second? A lot of writers are banging that drum, saying it's not what replay was meant for. I can see both sides. I don't think it's so obvious that the rule needs to be changed, but being able to challenge a play where a player popped off the bag for .5 seconds seems to put us in danger of boiling down the game to the tiniest of details

Swoosh- it needs to change.... Think that'll be the impetus to make that change....

what a great series. this sucks..

I respect that opinion

I don't see how it was conclusive.

when they synced the replays it was. Kind of like what you see in football sometimes.....

Wish the Nats had carried 3 catchers so they could have pr for Lobaton there.

Looks like the networks got the matchups they wanted...except...the Astros rather than the Red Sox-Yankees. Those pesky Astros.

RE: 2017 MLB Season Thread - stever20 - 10-12-2017 11:53 PM

NL it was going to be a win/win no matter what. LA/Chicago or LA/Washington- both great matchups.

RE: 2017 MLB Season Thread - C2__ - 10-12-2017 11:55 PM

Or alternatively, it could have been Indians-Astros, the best teams from the AL all year. They at least get the NYC team they wanted though.

The Nationals/Expos have no history. Even being in a big market they aren't a draw, certainly more than the Cubs. Could have been worse, the Rockies or D'Backs could still be alive.

amazing just how close Harper was in the 7th to hitting that grand slam that would have changed everything. just an inch and it's 11-9 and game probably over.

This is silly. Nats were 10th in average attendance, 12th in prime time ratings, certainly in the ballpark (no pun intended) of their market size. They'd have been a very good draw on the talent alone (Harper, Strasburg and Scherzer are all bigger attractions than anyone on the Dodgers not named Kershaw). Their market isn't as large as Chicago's so you'd never expect they'd draw better than Chicago, but it's nowhere near a market that MLB/networks would have been unhappy about being in the NLCS.

'twas. A great summary from Deadspin, referencing Scherzer:

Tom Ley Wrote:We’re constantly told, by coaches and broadcasters and players themselves, that all you can ask of a pitcher is for them to execute pitches. Put the right pitch to the right guy in the right place at the right time, and everything will be fine. The reason things are so often not fine is because that kind of execution is extremely hard to pull off over and over again during a baseball game—mistakes get punished.

But last night’s game proved that there is another reason, aside from poor execution, why things sometimes go all wrong for a pitcher, even one as good and fearsome as Max Scherzer. That reason is that baseball is a ******* *******. Sometimes every pitch is put where it’s supposed to be—you zap the long-armed utility man’s power, you get the pull-hitting catcher to roll over on a grounder—and you still end up in hell.

In case you're interested and don't feel like quoting this post to see the cuss words: "f'ing a-hole"

Yep - LA got about the best result it could have gotten. Lots of pitchers used, lots of stress and fatigue. And it all happened a day closer to the start of the NLCS than it was supposed to.

I assume this thread's gonna go back to a trickle now that Nats are eliminated and swoosh's 31st favorite MLB team is in the NLCS, but I'll try to keep up a running commentary and promise not to hide if the Dodgers 03-puke all over their cleats.

no I'll be around still....

Actually the game last night was when it was supposed to be played. The game on Wednesday was the one that was a day late.

I'm standing firmly behind the Astros and Yankees. Both of them are capable. If Judge hits, the Yankees are really good. #AnybodyButDodgers

If Cubs steal 1 in LA, they're going to be tough.

Rooting for the Yankees? That's gotta smart.

Sad stuff...

https://www.sbnation.com/mlb/2017/10/13/16468286/cubs-nationals-game-5-final-score-results-fan-reaction

According to Baseball Reference, in the 2.73 million half innings of baseball in all of recorded history, there has never been a sequence of events in the following order: intentional walk, passed ball strikeout, catcher interference, and hit by pitch. Only five games have had all four events occur period.
