RE: 2017 MLB Season Thread - stever20 - 09-30-2017 08:15 PM

well Kluber is out so the numbers are final for both guys....

Kluber 2.25 ERA 2.49 FIP 18-4
Sale 2.90 ERA 2.45 FIP 17-8

the final innings lead for Sale is only 10.2 innings. 214.1-203.2. Utterly meaningless. fWAR has it only 7.7-7.3 for Sale. The margin in bWAR was 7.8-6.0 for Kluber going into tonight.

and I pretty much called it months ago... I said-
Kluber 15-4 with a 2.25 ERA in 195 innings
Sale 18-6 with a 2.90 ERA in 225 innings

Kluber wound up with 203.2 innings to go along with his 18-4 record.
Sale wound up with 214.1 innings to go along with only a 17-8 record.

The only question for me is how huge the margin is. I think Kluber gets at least 20 of the 1st place votes, and wins easily. It's definitely not as close as the advanced metrics frankly blowhards want you to think it is.

One thing to remember in the NL MVP vote.... Folks that think Stanton (or Votto) shouldn't be a factor due to team not winning...

last year- the LA Angels were 74-88. 4th place in division. MVP winner though was Mike Trout...

Too often, I think folks look at voting thru the prism of how they feel it should be and not reality.

Votto won't win, but if he did, he would be the second-ever MVP on a last-place team. Andre Dawson won in 1987 while playing for the last-place Cubs. Votto would also get the "honor" of winning MVP on a team farther behind 1st place than the team of any other MVP winner. Last year's Angels finished 21 games out; the Reds are 25 out not counting Sunday's games.

poor swoosh. his favorite player- that's right- the Panda hits a walkoff homer to win the game today. That win costs his Giants the #1 pick in next years draft.

RE: 2017 MLB Season Thread - stever20 - 10-02-2017 01:44 PM

so looking at the season stats.... 1 big thing is the continued trend for starters to not go deep:
2017 5.51 innings per start for starters
2016 5.65
2015 5.81
2014 5.97
2013 5.69
2012 5.89
2011 6.03
2010 5.98
2009 5.81
2008 5.80

Only had 58 pitchers qualify this year for the ERA title(162 ip). Only had 75 guys get even 150 innings pitched. Makes you wonder if guys like Sale at 214 innings pitched will be the upper limit on innings that we ever see going forward.

anyone but the Yankees or the Red Sox... let someone else get a shot.

I still think its BS that they offer a 1 game playoff for a opening round series... should be at least 3 to get a feel for who is actually better.

well saw the Mets fans will be thrilled. They have reassigned Terry Collins, got rid of pitching coach Dan Warthen, and most importantly, fired their trainer.

RE: 2017 MLB Season Thread - stever20 - 10-04-2017 08:59 AM

the thing with Sale that is funny is I can really see why Sale fans are so frustrated.....

Sale has put together a great 6 year run. by fWAR he is tied for 2nd in WAR with Max Scherzer. Behind only Kershaw- and ahead of guys like Kluber, Price, Verlander, Bumgarner, King Felix. I think what probably frustrates Sale fans is that he’s not gotten a Cy Young yet- and not even gotten in the top 2. Only 2014 did he even get 3rd.

Sale has had a weird resume. 2 of the 1st 5 years he had FIP’s of 2.57 and 2.73. The 2.73 year his ERA was 3.41 so didn’t get much love. The 2.57 year(’14) his ERA was great at 2.17, BUT he only had 26 starts and 174 innings. But then in the other 3 years- he outpitched his FIP(but not enough to make a difference).

You can make a great case that he’s been the best AL pitcher on the whole for the last 6 years. His career MLB ERA is #2 active right now and his career MLB FIP is #4 active right now. I think that’s why some of his fans are pushing so hard for him this year for the Cy Young. And there are some for awards that feel awards should be for who is the best pitcher/player(in case of MVP)- not who had the best season.

Reminded me of one of those games from the third day of the college baseball tournament between teams that only have two good starters and one good reliever.

(Yes, I know MVP voting is over, but)

Stanton - On the Beach, losing record
Goldschmidt - Hit 3-run HR to spark the Dbacks into the NLDS

RE: 2017 MLB Season Thread - stever20 - 10-05-2017 03:07 PM

with how poorly Goldschmidt did in September, that cost him any shot at the MVP.

Maybe Ariel Prieto deserves some of the credit for that... 05-stirthepot

Too early in the game for any help from stealing signs (if that was what he was doing) - he says he had it on airplane mode.

Realistically, given you only have so many October days, do a two game series with aggregate score. That way, it eliminates a fluke game and makes it more than about whose ace is pitching. If tied, you just play extra innings but with sudden death.

You can cut back that 162 game regular season....

They really should. I've long said baseball should be a weekend and holiday sport.

I don't think that'll be a problem this year.. Cleveland and Houston are miles better than the AL-East boys...

And Houston pretty much ROCKED the probably AL Cy Young winner.. a 12.60 ERA for Sale :)

Wheee... I have a team that's doing something this year!!! YEAH!!! Stay hot Altuve!
