I could be wrong but I think Tom Crean has a massive buyout until 2020. I'd guess he gets through this year, but next year the heat gets turned on. In nine seasons at IU, Crean has yet to advance past the Sweet 16. At some schools, especially IU, that just won't cut it.

That is a tough job. Being 5-7 in conference doesn't cut it there, and being worse than Purdue must be completely unacceptable there.
Do the best coaching candidates really want to coach at IU? There is history, and compared to some other Big Ten schools it has the advantage (from a basketball coach's perspective) that football is not the king sport on campus. But only a diehard IU fan would argue that it's one of the three best basketball coaching jobs in the Big Ten. And it's also not one of the ten most attractive jobs nationally.

I work with a number of Hoosiers. The ones I work with don't seem to want him gone. The problem in Bloomington is if they did get rid of him who would take the job?
As a Hoosier that lived in Indiana during the end of Bobby, Mike Davis, Kelvin Sampson into Tom Crean, what many don't know about IU is they have terrible facilities. The ceiling of Assembly Hall actually fell in 2014 during basketball season. The problem at IU is Bobby was so successful and he didn't need all the bells and whistles that other coaches and programs did. When Bobby left IU found themselves behind.

A couple of my Son's friends made this video about IU. Shows some awesome history of the program. If you can't tell I root for Indiana except when they play Louisville.

IU has been to the tourney 5/6 years, was 15-3 in conference last year and sweet 16. He has been to 3 sweet 16s, that is pretty good. Not really about Purdue, Gene Keady had a winning record vs. IU.

His buyout goes from $4 million to $1million this summer so maybe IU keeps him around another year. However, he might bolt for another job to get out out town if he think next season looks hopeless at IU.

From afar it may look like he should be done but you really don't hear anyone calling for his job. The comment Bluesox made about Crean leaving does hold some merit.
If a job in Michigan came open, he might try to jump. One of the MAC schools perhaps. He is married to Jim Harbaugh's sister so there are family ties.

Thad Matta would want the job, but given what has happened the past two seasons in Columbus, I doubt he would be under consideration.

Crean would have Mizzou at least a top 4 team in the SEC every year. Perfect spot for him.

If Crean is still the coach at IU next season, then the AD is not serious about bringing their program back to national prominence. No program with the history that IU has would accept the mediocrity of the current staff. Crean's been at IU almost a decade, had multiple first round draft picks, won the B1G twice, and yet the furthest he's gone in the tournamant is the Sweet 16. He's made an entire career on one Final 4 appearance thanks to Dwyane Wade.
This would not be acceptable to me if I were and IU fan. I know several, and they all want him gone.

My thought exactly. Crean knows that his tenure at IU has been a disappointment & Harbaugh would have the weight to swing to get him the HC job there before IU is forced to fire him. A former Butler coach wanting to come home could also force the issue but that isn't likely.

Brad Stevens, IMO, is never coaching in college again. He is one of the very best NBA coaches today, and the Celtics are stacked for a very bright future with all of the Nets' first round draft picks coming up.
(Full disclosure, I really like Tom Crean because of my interactions with him and my experiences at Marquette): Yes, he has been at IU nearly a decade. It is difficult to fault him the first 2-3 years, however, since - when he arrived after Sampson (how he ever got another HC job is unbelievable) - he entered into an absolute mess (which is why I believe he originally received an 8-year deal). He had no scholarship players remaining, had several kids transfer out, kicked several kids off the team, and was able to clean up the program with guys like Oladipo, Zeller, Sheehy, Bryant, Vonleh and Ferrell to reinvigorate the fan base and get things moving in the right direction again. Now, obviously, the Hoosiers aren't winning this year - a year in which they were picked to compete for the B1G title. He has yet to have a team advance past the Sweet 16. At a place like Indiana, no matter what the situation you entered, you will always be on the hot seat if you aren't in the conversation for a deep tournament run. Calipari doing what he has done at Kentucky has only added fuel to the proverbial fire.
As a Marquette student when Crean was there (only my freshman year), I can say that Crean's speciality is energizing a fan base, developing athletic guards and recruiting very well. Where Crean struggles as a coach is his in game adjustments, rarely deviates from game plan - even if it isn't working, his inability to develop and utilize bigs, and have consistent success in March. Had Crean not gone on a Final Four run with Marquette, he likely would not have received consideration for the IU job in 2008, or been reached out to about the Kansas job in 2003 (after his Final Four run).
Personally, Crean belongs in a midwestern/northeastern big city with a strong basketball program (not elite) and one does not have the high demand of a place like Indiana. If a place like DePaul, St. Johns, Cincinnati or Pittsburgh were open, he would do very well in places like those. Maybe a place like Missouri would suit him well, but I know he loves the midwest and playing in the SEC goes against that. If Archie Miller left Dayton this offseason for a better job, Dayton would be a great place for him as well.

Tom Cream is on the hotseat yes. Cream has struggled for too long with mediocre squads when deep runs in the tournament are expected each year. I see Cream puff being creamed again at the conference tourney leading him to be sh!t canned.

In Bob Knight's last 8 seasons they had 1 sweet 16. In the last 25 years 1 Elite 8, and NCAA title game loss with Mike Davis as head coach. It isn't easy making the tourney every year and then advancing. Not that many programs do it every year.
