I have to recommend listening to podcasts instead of sports radio. You can listen to whatever show you want, fast forward through commercials, listen at your own pace, etc. The only downside is you'll be missing local stuff, but I am not sure if radio after 4pm was ever the best choice for digesting local sports news.

Pants was way better than Cattles, and he actually came to some ODU games. If they bring Cattles back, I'm done.

Yep.

Agreed...I've heard it's not exactly a popular decision among the rank and file at Max Media either.

RE: ESPN 94.1 - Cyniclone - 05-18-2018 01:52 PM

My concern is more that 94.1 thinks Cattles is the kind of guy to do their show. Obviously they like what he does, which means there's pretty much no chance he'll be much different than he was his first go-round. There's an audience for his type of show, but it doesn't augur well for better ODU coverage in the afternoon drive-time slot.

RE: ESPN 94.1 - Old Dominion - 05-18-2018 02:32 PM

I finally checked out of sports talk radio after coming to the realization that what I had thought was relaxing banter was actually silly beyond belief. Mike and Mike arguing like school boys over some idiotic nothing event like it was as serious as WWIII finally dawned on me. Now I pretty much just listen to NPR.

Say what you will about Mercurio, but he actually covered local sports. More then that, he has long relationships when many local and prominent sports personalities. I remember once when he was “stood up” by a call in guest. Within a few minutes Mercurio received an impromptu call from Michael Cuddyer. Cuddyer said he was out running errands, was listening to the show, and offered to be the fill in guest for the next hour. Mercurio accepted the offer and he was.

Think something like that would ever happen with Pant’s or Cattle’s?

I agree. He had great local guests on. I loved when he spoke with Dave Rosenfield about the old day's.

Sorry, but Mercurio was plain garbage, no matter what guests he brought in

I had my issues with him at times, but with Mercurio I was a regular listener. Once Cattle’s came on board I quickly tuned out. Not anywhere near enough local knowledge and way too much left wing liberal bull****.

I remember mecurio advertising that he would give free tickets to Missouri fans to the game we played against them at the ted, absolute dirtbag. Nick cattle’s is trash too

RE: ESPN 94.1 - MonarchCAM - 05-19-2018 02:39 PM

Tony got lazy and cocky because he never had competition. Cattels just doesn't care about anything local and doesn't think it's worth his time to try...and he's lazy. Pants at least tried to mix it up a bit. I think he let the peanut gallery take over too much at times but at least he put forth an effort.

Rumor has it this was more of a sponsor move than anything else.

RE: ESPN 94.1 - ODUCoach - 05-19-2018 03:02 PM

Pants wasn’t in town long enough to make the local connections, but I always got the sense he was trying to immerse himself as much as he could in the local scene. Cattles acted as if he hosted a national show and showed very little interest in local sports, other than when he got excited about the arena.

Not a fan of Cattels.
But whatever they do, hope the station does more local — ODU, NSU, Va Wesleyan. Kids are out of school, out of area, so don’t care too much for local high school sports. Would appreciate regional approach to sports radio with a lot of local schools, Va Tech, Va and some of the nearby ACC schools. Like coachs’s shows.

Did Pants have just awful ratings or did someone with deep pockets really want Cattles back in Hampton Roads bad enough to pay for it? If it was the former admittedly I'm part of the problem as I didn't come back after Cattles drove me away and I kept Sirius after I got a new car three years ago. If it is the latter said sponsor needs to be under the care of a team of physicians.

RE: ESPN 94.1 - Gilesfan - 05-21-2018 11:18 AM

I didnt even remember that Cattles left. That is how often I listen.

I've only heard rumors, but it leans more toward sponsors than ratings. Not that one person wanted Cattles...just not enough business were buying time. I don't think Cattles will change that though. I think that has more to do with sustained competition spreading out advertiser dollars than the host. (at least I hope so for humanity's sake. Cause if Cattles is really what this region wants....I fear for our future.)

Listened to Mercurio a bit today and as much as I hate to say it, it kind of felt like a breath of fresh air. Was about to have Evander Holyfield on the show when I left the car.
