Student Section in Trask - Fletch 8 - 12-28-2016 12:39 AM

Why was the student section in Trask moved from opposite the bench to behind the bench?

Do non-students like player or coach family members sit behind the bench bleachers? I think they do but why?

Students should have a large section exclusively for students so they can stand the whole game and yell without feeling self-conscious about letting an expletive fly or smell like booz. This was how Trask was before and I think it lost this somewhere. Family members, donors, etc. should be in a different area and discouraged from sitting there.

I believe they flipped the benches not the sections. Students still sit in the same section of bleachers, they just are not very organized imo. Student turnout and participation should increase once school is back in session

It was a sold out crowd vs ECU but it didn't sound all that impressive on TV. I was wondering if this had anything to do with it.

Last season everyone on the board was confused why students were sitting during games and not loud as usual. I looked back at video of games from last year/this year and can see player's families sitting behind the bench for both teams. If you are not a die hard like us and people next to you are sitting it makes you question if you should be standing or not (don't want to get in the way, noise, etc.). 2003 - 2007 during big games that whole bleacher was 100% students.

I guess we have to wait a couple weeks until William & Mary on the 12th or Hofstra on the 14th. If it isn't back to the Trask of old I'm suggesting administration should at least try flipping the benches back to the other side so students can have one whole bleacher to themselves. I think moving the band upstairs was a great start and an indication that they pay attention to stuff like this. A poll of NCAA coaches showed that student section placement was the #1 factor in home court advantage.

As Solo mentioned, they moved the benches. When they did the track remodel the benches and scorers table switched sides.

We need to take a note from Campbell and put our band right next to the visiting bench. During timeouts play loud and keep them distracted. It was very loud at Campbell and annoying.

RE: Student Section in Trask - tke75hawk - 12-28-2016 09:18 AM

They moved the bench so it would be close to the students and for it to be loud for opposing team.all schools are required to give seats to team behind bech

Non-conference games as a student (especially the ones over Christmas break) are very annoying. Parents with small children are all over the student section and it makes standing up/chanting very tricky because not everyone, including some students, just refuse to get into it. Generally speaking, student turn out gets better and better as conference pay goes on and the Hawks keep rolling. Which means less room for non-students and more room for chaos!04-cheers

I personally would love the ECU game to open the year for both teams, but I understand why the do it how they do it. ECU game sold out w/o students. Since students do no pay for their tickets the school makes more money on legit sellouts w/o students there.

Student section come January should be packed with students and they should all be standing and loud. The school made additional room for students to stand with the cheerleaders and dance team behind one of the baskets. I have yet to see students take advantage of that, but I do not think that is marketed very well by the administration.

I also highly doubt either school would wish to interrupt CAA play, even in the early going, for a non-conference bout like that.

Whoops, I meant the basketball year.

Would love for us to Open w/ ECU that first basketball Friday in November in even years and open in Greenville in odd years.

That would be a lot of fun.

They have made many changes to seating and the like in Trask and it has changed the dynamic big time. First change I can remember was putting the press table in front of the baseball team as a barrier between them and the visitor bench. The baseball team players could get a little out of hand at times but man those guys had an impact on the games. They ended up moving the baseball team out of that area completely. The biggest changes were taking out the bleachers and putting in seat back chairs. I get it that is how they saw a chance to raise a little money but it killed the place with all the empty seats on that side and fans who don't ever respond to the game but just sit there and leave at the 5 minute mark to beat what little traffic there is after the game. Moving the benches to the student side went with this because they didn't want to give away the expensive seats to the players families-it worked better with the students facing the benches. This is the same plan that ECU used at Minges and now Trask is basically a copy of that. I don't see any way that Trask can ever be the insane homecourt advantage that it was prior to the changes.

RE: Student Section in Trask - solohawks - 12-28-2016 12:41 PM

The baseball team can still sit together in the student section if they choose to do so. I wish they would get front row seats. Their choice though.

The bench thing is not a big deal imo. If the students show up, stand up, and scream its a tough atmosphere. The non student bleachers never stood up the entire game anyways so putting backs on those chairs was smart.

You cannot pick on the school for not having any money then pick on them when they do something to make money

I did not pick on them for trying to raise money but I don't think it worked out for them in this case. The baseball team was treated very poorly back then but I do agree they could reform as a unit and make some noise if they even come to the games that is. The student body as a whole seems to have moved in a different direction that sort of follows the age and what they are into these days and it is not sporting events. There were many games that the non student side was much louder than the students-you must not have attended games back then. The place was crazy on both sides and it is a graveyard now on that side.

RE: Student Section in Trask - Fletch 8 - 12-28-2016 02:46 PM

In the old layout you could look the other team on the bench directly in the face from across the court the whole game. Now students can't do that. They stare at the backs of their heads or just in their peripheral vision at best the whole time. I think this subtle difference in the student section location is a big deal.

We will have to wait and see if Trask is back later this season. If it is not I am just suggesting administration tries flipping the benches back to the other side. It seems like an easy adjustment, no? They were open to moving the band upstairs.

RE: Student Section in Trask - SEA33HAWK - 12-28-2016 02:48 PM

I was involved with the section the baseball team back then. The overall problems there didn't come directly from players but friends and other students sliding in there with them. Some were very intoxicated and made it look bad on the baseball team.

I believe we should first work filling Trask on a consistent basis and making a lot of noise.

I loved the baseball players being there and the problems were few in my mind compared to what they created. Did see a few things that were out of line but nothing that warranted kicking them out of there but maybe I missed some stuff. They also helped fire up the east side bleachers. It was an absolute zoo for visiting teams to be stuck on that end with the baseball team giving them grief.

Been attending games since 95. The non student side could definitely get loud but we have always had the students leading the way as long as I can remember. If you are going back into the 80's then perhaps you are right but for 20+ years the student side has been the heart and soul.
