ULL schedules H-H with NMSU in 2018 - Tom in Lazybrook - 12-22-2016 02:36 AM

Good for them. at ULL in 2018 and at NMSU in 2019. Also NMSU schedules H-H with Wyoming (NMSU 2018, at Wyoming in 2024).

NMSU has 3 games scheduled for 2018....@Minn, Wyomng, @ULL. They'll need 8 more plus a FCS.

They probably need six more. Barring a sudden unforeseeable change in tradition (certainly not impossible), NMSU will play UTEP and New Mexico.

They ought to go ahead and schedule UMass as often as possible. They both just need games.

Also, if I was Georgia Southern's AD, I would be working on a series with NMSU, too. GS seems to have struggled to get home and homes, and the Aggies would surely agree to one with the Eagles.

Glad to see this matchup.

Think they will, UMass needs 1 more game for 2018. Question is does UMASS want a 6th home game or will they help NMSU to have a home game for 2018?

RE: ULL schedules H-H with NMSU in 2018 - Tom in Lazybrook - 12-22-2016 11:58 AM

There's not a lot of openings, especially for teams to travel to NMSU in 2018. They need to work on that. They'll need 5 home games (1 may be vs FCS).

Do you or anybody know what happens if they don't get a full schedule or 5 home games? Will they be on probation? Getting 11 instead of 12 games may not be an issue but right now only have 2 home games scheduled for 2018 (NM and Wyo). I'm sure there is a FCS team they could grab quickly for third home game. If they could get UMass at home for 2018, then that will be a fourth home game. That leaves at least 1 game to try to hunt for a FBS team to play at NMSU in 2018.
But that still leaves 6 or games to find on the road.

I don't know, but they might be in trouble. They have one home game scheduled for 2018 (Wyoming). They can buy another (FCS). Umass has 11 games already scheduled, 6 of which are on the road. I don't think travelling to Las Cruces for road game 7 of the year is going to be that attractive to them. Surprisingly, UMass also has a pretty decent end of the year schedule too.

Here's NMSU's issue. Looking at G5 teams that have an opening in 2018 and could conceivably schedule at NMSU AND still have 6 home games is tough. Heck there aren't a lot of teams that could even host NMSU in 2018.

Here are the G5 teams that have an 'away' game still open that could conceivably be used to travel to Las Cruces.

Army, UTEP, FIU, WMU, Colorado St, Utah State, Nevada, Coastal Carolina. That it for home game possibilities. NMSU needs to ink THREE of these 8 teams. They'll need to get on it soon. I'm not sure the greater El Paso area is on the radar for Coastal, WMU, or FIU. And many schools that have an early away game to give, usually want to trade it for a higher placed opponent. And NMSU can't play all these home games in September. Someone is going to have to go to NMSU in October. Some teams aren't going to want to do that.

If they can swing 2018, especially without doing 2 for 1 swaps, they'll be in a much better place for 2019 forward.

Army has an 'away' slot in 2018.

I don't think this is as difficult as you are making it out to be

Here is what NMSU has scheduled for 2018:

@ Minnesota
vs Wyoming
@ ULL
vs New Mexico
@ UTEP

Assuming they'll pull in an FCS, that gives them 6 of 12 games. You can almost guarantee a game at UMASS for 7.

From there its about finding 2 FBS schools willing to play at Las Cruces. If Army is willing, that would be one and they would simply need one more team of all the games listed to play them at home. From that point, they could do money games and 2 for 1's with P5's to fill the rest of the games.

Army will pull a better game than traveling all the way to New Mexico State. They can come to West Point but we gain nothing from a trip to there.

But apparently you gain from traveling to play an FCS like you did a couple years ago, or playing two FCS in the same season?

Football scheduling doesn't work like fans want it to. You can't just say "well, we'll never travel there because it makes no sense for us." If often comes down to who needs games, and who are the available options left. Army may have no choice but to travel to NMSU.

Seems like army would play anywhere considering their fan base and recruiting area is scattered across the entire country.

And, FT. Bliss, part of which is in New Mexico, is on of their largest bases.

Doesn't Army play at least one road game in the MAC pretty much every year? I guess that's closer to West Point...but I really don't see how NMSU would be any less worthy of hosting them...

100th anniversary of the Yale Bowl. Ever hear of a special occasion? And Yale was an ancient rival.

Two FCS in a season? They are regional or Patriot League teams. Easy wins and home games. Fine by me.

No crap. Don't talk down. Army already has games with UMass scheduled. So far, the administration does not view NMSU good enough. Our schedules for the next 5 years are basically finalized.

If we have to travel to Loser Land, then it is an embarrassment. But it will be an easy win.

Those soldiers can travel to Texas for our annual games there. We recruit in Texas.

Hood, your football program has accomplished very little over the last several years. Of course we're going to return the favor if you talk down NMSU.

Completely ignoring my points.

Maybe so but NMSU hasn't accomplished anything of importance and 95℅ of the CFB fan base doesn't know their nickname.

You fellows sure are defensive of a member you are kicking out. Ah, conference pride. Peer pressure and group think at its finest.
