Break ground on the new facilities soon, get to another bowl game this year, and the momentum should continue. I've been one of the harshest critics as far as recruiting, but give credit where credit is due. Nice mix of high school and Juco's should be the consistent plan going forward. I think Nunez really injected some life into the recruiting, and hopeful Peterson and Needham will do more of the same.

Notice we now have a recruiting coordinator, an assistant recruiting coordinator, and a recruiting assistant. Progress!

Epic Applause

This isn't news, but the graphics/media work that EMU is doing for FB gets better and better all the time.

Very impressed. 04-cheers

I'm hopeful that EMU might be headed toward a 'golden age' for EMU FB. As E'Tough indicates there are a LOT of things looking very positive.

I'm not a real marketing man, per se. Too often it is like trying to sell hamburger with steak sauce, as kind of like steak, if you know what I mean (sometimes marketing can be very disingenuous).

But in this case, it is a really nice, feel good effort which the new recruits should feel good about.

It does send a message that the football operation is first rate.

O/T, not EMU-related, but I can not figure out this MI h.s. player's recruitment.

Should have had his choice of schools and signs late with Fresno State.

We offered. Apparently he visited Syracuse, WMU, and Fresno. Picked Fresno.

Oden stepping down only makes it more bizzare.

Something very shady about that whole situation. A lot of bigger, more well known teams ran away from the kid right at the end. Guess our old OC and OL coach REALLY needed some OL help! 03-lmfao

I think the kid sat out his junior year because of injuries but not sure.

Justice Williams announced that he's leaving EMU.

Guess he will have 3 to play 3 if he goes FCS or D-II (e.g., GLIAC). I'd like to think a lot of players would stay around a couple years and then decide if FBS is their appropriate level for their abilities.

LOT of options at the FCS level. There are FCS conferences comparable to the MAC (e.g., Missouri Valley) while others are a little lower (say Colonial) and then there are weaker conferences.

Even the lesser FB conferences have nice options. There is Stony Brook on Long Island in N.Y. Howard, a good HBCU school, in Washington, D.C. is on a big upswing with Cam Newton's brother at QB. Villanova in Philly. Towson in Baltimore.

GLIAC a D-II Midwest conference with schools driving distance from his home including many in MI.

I hope he chooses wisely. Many, many good options.

And EMU picks up another scholarship for say a grad transfer or save for a walk-on who might earn a scholarship.

RE: 2018 Football Recruiting - dansplaining - 02-23-2018 10:05 AM

GLIAC is the SEC of Div-II - don't sleep on any of those teams in terms of talent

Absolutely!

Williams came out of h.s. a good MAC recruit. He needs to decide where he wants to play.

I'm sure a good GLIAC team OR a decent FCS school would take a flyer on him. Big thing is to get the full scholarship.

Just got recruited over. Staff saw him for 2 years, decided they needed to bring 2 Juco DE's on board instead, writing was on the wall.

Good luck to Justice.

Just another example that "Star Ratings" are not a good indicator of future success or of strength of a recruiting class as CC has said many times. Justice was a 3* out of HS.

Absolutely.

Four and five stars have pretty good predictive validity or value as to predicting FBS success, but two or three stars not too much.

Why is this so?

First, five star athletes are usually outliers, kids who are like Clowney, Chris Webber, etc. etc. who are simply head and shoulders above the best. They are like in the 99th percentile. I remember seeing video of Ted Ginn Jr. from a h.s. all-star game. He was in his own world as to speed. I'm not a Mel Kiper, etc. but when I see something like Clowney, Ted Ginn Jr., Orlando Pace, etc. it just hits you in the face.

Four star athletes are clearly superior. Might be like the h.s. kid who scores 30 on his ACT. Just get the impression that he (or she) is something special.

The twos and threes are more the average or above average prospects. Hard to tell which one will over achieve and be a star or underachieve and be a bust and a lot willl be players but not great or all-conference.

And then 1-star are most likely walk-ons. Expectations are low, but sometimes one or two surprise.

Lowest ranked 3 star Michigan HS player for the Michigan HS recruiting Class of 2016. Williams was the #57 player in the State according to 247. Signing with EMU and an early offer from Toledo. Player #58 was a 2 star rated player.

Williams was a DITR with few offers. Had the measureables and a few sacks his Sr. year so he got 'overrated'. Overwhelmed at the D1 level. Hindsight being 20/20 he was a D2 prospect from the start. Should get some playing time at Ferris or the like.

Most of these 2/3 star MAC kids are about development, and want-to. Do their bodies develop accordingly, do they get the right coaching, and do they have the mental toughness to really push themselves to get better and maximize their potential.

Couple thoughts:

1). We have 'grade inflation' if there are 57 three-star recruits in any MI h.s. senior class.

2). If he really was a 3-star recruit, then 3-stars is the de facto lower limit for MAC prospects.

Any given year, I assume there are say 50 or max of 60 Big Ten or MAC prospects. The top say 25 or 30 are B1G prospects and the other say 25 are MAC prospects.

I don't see more than say 60 MI h.s. seniors signing to play FBS ball as scholarship players from any given high school class.

E.g., Grissom may have had a B1G 'ranking' but might not have had the grades. Howie was a low B1G/high MAC caliber recruit, in that 25 - 35 range.

Again assigning ranks is about as subjective as one gets. Anything more than assigning ranks based on test scores, times in the 40 yard dash, etc. is very unreliable.

Even things like say: "Joe scored 23 on the ACT and that placed him in the 55th percentile" (an example, think I'm fairly close). 55th percentile is pretty murky for predictions.

Definitely inflated rankings.
Btw, Justin Clark was the #63 player. He's been a decent CB for the Rockets.

Type of grad transfer I'd like to have (Drake Harris to WMU).

Nah, a soft overrated diva who did nothing at UM, with only 1 year of eligibility, I'll pass. Give me Juco guys with 2+years eligibility, and something to prove, all day.

9 catches, 60 yds, and zero TD's in 4 years! Yeah, but he was a 4 star recruited by Meechigan..............big deal!
