Fake-news writer: ‘I think Donald Trump is in the White House because of me’ - john01992 - 11-18-2016 08:48 AM

What do the Amish lobby, gay wedding vans and the ban of the national anthem have in common? For starters, they’re all make-believe — and invented by the same man.

Paul Horner, the 38-year-old impresario of a Facebook fake-news empire, has made his living off viral news hoaxes for several years. He has twice convinced the Internet that he’s British graffiti artist Banksy; he also published the very viral, very fake news of a Yelp vs. “South Park” lawsuit last year.

But in recent months, Horner has found the fake-news ecosystem growing more crowded, more political and vastly more influential: In March, Donald Trump’s son Eric and his then-campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, even tweeted links to one of Horner’s faux-articles. His stories have also appeared as news on Google.

Quote:Honestly, people are definitely dumber. They just keep passing stuff around. Nobody fact-checks anything anymore — I mean, that’s how Trump got elected. He just said whatever he wanted, and people believed everything, and when the things he said turned out not to be true, people didn’t care because they’d already accepted it. It’s real scary. I’ve never seen anything like it.

Quote:My sites were picked up by Trump supporters all the time. I think Trump is in the White House because of me. His followers don’t fact-check anything — they’ll post everything, believe anything. His campaign manager posted my story about a protester getting paid $3,500 as fact. Like, I made that up. I posted a fake ad on Craigslist.

Actually,Trump supporters didnt believe one thing they read, because the news was all crap. The reason libturds are so butthurt is BECAUSE THEY BELIEVED the fake news stories that Clinton was ahead or that she had a 99% chance of winning.

Learn to think for yourselves, and the whole world opens up for you.

Yep, this election should finally teach them they can't believe their own news media. "Hillary's up by x points! I don't even have to vote!" lol

Hubris by the fake news writer. Both sides can be found guilty of entering their own respective echo chambers and preferring to consume the news that most lines up with our views. Facebook has made some wicked feedback loops that amplified this phenomenon. So this guy taking credit is laughable. Call it for what it is - a guy looking to plug himself shamelessly.

My take as well. Dude just looking for his 15 minutes. Looks like his income stream is about to be cut off though.

For people who agree with the above-quote -- and I definitely agree with it -- I'd like to ask how that happened. What caused it, etc.

Confirmation bias.

This is my understanding:

- the way it used to work is: Facebook would pay-out to the articles that were most popular (most clicks, most shares, etc.)
- the people who setup the fake news sites (in Macedonia), therefore targeting fake-news to Trump supporters, knowing that they would get the most clicks, shares and so on

It was purely to make money, off the way Facebook was compensating the articles.

Since this has come out, Facebook has changed that pay-out structure.

Fake news sites did help determine the election but it wasn't the one this dude ran.

It was these fake news sites:

http://www.cnn.com/

http://www.msnbc.com/

http://www.nytimes.com/

https://www.washingtonpost.com/

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/

http://www.cbsnews.com/

So a fake news guy is creating more fake news about the fake news he created in order to get Trump elected.

Sounds legit.

I don't think 'this guy' did anything.... but I think there might be some truth in what he's saying.... only the people he's talking about are the left.

The left 'heard' Trump say that he was going to round up Muslims in this country and ban all immigrants and that ALL women are fat ugly pigs etc etc etc.... but that isn't what he actually said.... but even when proven wrong, the left didn't care because they'd already accepted it. Thus not only was Trump painted as a Xenophobe and Racist, but the obvious correlation (because you bought the initial flawed premise) is that all of his supporters were racists and xenophobes. That didn't turn off voters who didn't buy the premise, and only further turned 'the middle' against the left at least enough to keep them from voting at all. The coal miner in PA who usually votes D voting to keep his job wasn't doing that because he was a racist or xenophobe and the guy in Wisconsin voting to keep his gun wasn't either. Neither were the people in Alaska who vote R because that's just what they do. So calling R's racist didn't work on anyone except the people who were already going to vote D anyway... meanwhile R's were talking to them about the jobs they'd lost and the MORE jobs the D's wanted to eliminate. What many women heard was that they needed to vote for her because she's a woman, not because of her policies (iirc her own team wasn't paying women the same wages) which is insulting to lots of them. Yes, Trump insulted specific women... but he also praised specific women. Hillary did both as well, but she also insulted 'generic' women... he whole campaign did. They tried to claim that he was talking about ALL women, when he was only talking about a specific one. Even when proven wrong, they stuck to that claim.

No, they were just voting for their own interests instead of the nation/world's interests. 07-coffee3

Take that, nation/world.

easily the most of obvious statements that could be made (hopefully you hear the tone correctly)

another caveat is I have yet to hear anything tangible from a lib that makes 'cents'.....not one single line item...not one single thing that works within the working class....they only understand _________

their platform is akin to vapor.....

Well - yeah. Normally those who are calling for sacrifices to be made are the ones who won't be making the sacrifices. Funny how that works.

'cuz paw never mentioned why you always vote red if you enjoy your back pocket....

however, when it turns blue, one learns how to earn bank in that arena also....

the bottom line is this.....red runs the marathon whilst the blue are only sprinters.....one could argue the exact opposite....hence, they are the same

Just this morning I was reading the EP Times and I only read a paragraph or two because most of it is fake news to me because it's controlled by the Gannett Corp. This is what Libbers should have done. Most knew the Media was against Trump and they still believe everything those rags printed.

RE: Fake-news writer: ‘I think Donald Trump is in the White House because of me’ - MplsBison - 11-18-2016 12:54 PM

"Normally those who are calling for sacrifices to be made are the ones who won't be making the sacrifices."

For example, I voted for the Mpls Schools referendum, even though it was in my interest to vote against it (pay less taxes). But I voted for it, because that's better for the school district. I don't have kids in the district, either.

That's how everyone should vote, IMO. What's best for the greater good, should always have more importance than what's selfishly good for yourself.
