Jim Delany: Friday night games coming to the Big Ten - Transic_nyc - 11-02-2016 02:43 PM

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/college/ct-big-ten-friday-night-games-20161102-story.html

Quote:The selected games will be revealed this week, as early as Wednesday afternoon.

“All things considered,” Delany said, “we thought it was worthwhile to dip our toe in the water.”

With the exception of Labor Day weekend, the league has turned down Friday night games, citing a conflict with high school football and concerns about impacting class time and campus logistics.

Delany said the league is reluctant to ask schools with giant seating capacities to host Friday night games, so don’t expect games to be played at Ohio State or Penn State.

And Michigan is flat-out saying no to Friday night games, both home and road. Delany said he believes the school simply prefers Saturday games for “consistency of presentation.”

Delany said there will be three conference games and three non-league games in September and October. No team will play more than twice.

Rutgers and Maryland, you are up!

yuck. get ready to show off half empty stadiums for half of the game while people are commuting home from NYC and Philly.

Not a huge fan but at least Penn State won't be hosting one. However, Michigan has to be the special princess and avoid it altogether.

Ohio State has said it will host during fall break and once every three years. I am sure there will be road games too. I really, really hate this move.

Not a fan of this at all, all the non-Saturday football going on around the country has hurt the college football game day pageantry IMO.

RE: Jim Delany: Friday night games coming to the Big Ten - ohio1317 - 11-02-2016 05:03 PM

Michigan State I think normally hosts Friday the first week of year and Nebraska/Iowa is Black Friday now. Hopefully those count as 2 of the 6 every year.

And honestly those two Fridays I have no issues with, especially Black Friday which has hosted football for a long time and football is a major part of Thanksgiving weekend in a lot of households.

High school football in the Midwest are very popular, this is a bad move.

Yep...as much as I don't want it to happen, Terps will be a regular I suspect.

I'd rather Friday night than Saturday noon. I may start going to games again.

Exactly, just like I think the NFL should go (back) to only playing 4 Thursday games a year. 1 on opening night and 3 on Thanksgiving. Much, much better for the product. Reduce the overexposure and get rid of the crappy play by teams still kind of dinged up from Sunday.

College Fridays should work similarly. Only during Bowl Season, Labor Day Weekend and Thanksgiving Weekend.

Yeah most of us Big 10 fans have gotten used to the 11am/noon starts...probably didn't have much of that at Rutgers pre Big 10.

When I was a grad student at Wisconsin I'd say 60% of our games were 11am starts...tailgate starting at 8am.

RE: Jim Delany: Friday night games coming to the Big Ten - ohio1317 - 11-03-2016 03:53 PM

Noons are a traditional start time for Ohio State and honestly, if not for the fact I am now usually working then, I'd wish for a more of them. Only gotten a couple last couple of years when noons used to be 60/70%.

Looks like Wisconsin will be hosting one in year 1...Friday of labor day weekend at home against Utah State.

https://www.cornnation.com/2017/7/13/15964998/nebraska-huskers-athletics-shawn-eichorst-faculty-senate-questions-answers-friday-night-football

Quote:Friday Night Football: Per Eichorst, Nebraska is slated to host one Friday night home game every third year under the new Big Ten Friday Night initiative. The Huskers can also be the road team once a season. Eichorst did state that the preference is “extremely limited” due to the ramifications of having a home game. The Huskers are set to take on Illinois in Champaign this coming season on a Friday night.

Basically, you not only have to shut down the campus and downtown Lincoln, but the thought of having a lot of Nebraska high school games go to Thursday or Saturday has to be considered. I do like the thought of several games at Memorial Stadium on a Saturday to combat that. However, one has to wonder about staffing and what teams would play, as I would think Omaha teams aren’t moving their games to Lincoln.

While there are no special financial bonuses for hosting a B1G home game on a Friday, there’s no known penalty if Nebraska refuses to host a game, like Michigan or Penn State has mentioned. There are merits of hosting a game, such as exposure on an evening not a lot of games are going. That being said, the weight of what has to happen for a game to go off needs to be weighted.

RE: Jim Delany: Friday night games coming to the Big Ten - Hokie Mark - 07-14-2017 06:45 AM

I'm confused about something. If the new TV contract included Friday night games, there must be a penalty for not delivering on those games, right? Apparently that information has not been made public? I know with the ACC the league was offered a bonus for playing a 9th conference game, but it was only something like $500,000 per year - so the schools turned it down in favor of more flexibility (since many schools wanted a 2nd P5 OOC game). However, the ACC did take the deal for some Friday night games... not sure the exact value, though.

I also have absolutely no problem with Friday night games.

I don't get all the hand wringing over this. Before most high schools had lights, they played on Saturday mornings/afternoons. In fact, many still do. Why some seem to think that high schools now OWN Friday nights is beyond me.

Beyond that, not everyone cares about high school football. Some of us want to be able to watch a decent college football game on a Friday night and we have just as might right to do so as the HS fan.

There's also this little piece of reality as well........

When the networks are going to pay you almost $450 million PER YEAR, they're going to want programming and program options. They aren't going to pay that kind of money unless they think they're going to get eyeballs on their network. Since Friday nights have a reputation of being slow sports nights on TV, what better way to get viewership than to have a major conference playing games on a Friday night?

Pretty simple, if you want your favorite school to share in that bigger piece of the pie you're going to have to give a little bit. If you're THAT much of a "purist", I'd suggest writing your University President and urge them to not accept all that additional money. Good luck with that.

Exactly! And no one is forcing your school to play every Friday night. Oh no once a year your team plays on a Friday! Lord have mercy! Get over it, most of us don't care about HS football. I'd much rather have a interesting game on afterwork on a Friday night. The Big East started Thursday Night Football with exciting games back in 2007/08. UofL beating ranked WVU then the next week Rutgers beat highly ranked UofL. It was exciting football when no one else was on. I remember fun games against Matt Grothe led USF on Fridays a few times.

Michigan with it's temper tantrum about it should give their extra money to the schools who will gladly play Friday nights like Maryland and Rutgers.

You nailed that on squarely on the head.

God forbid those of us who love college football have a chance to watch one of our conference's teams play on Friday night, wouldn't want to upset the 500 people showing up to Bum F**k Egypt High's "Friday night game".

Seems to me that the type of people who are most vehemently against this are the same ones who believe we should go back to playing in leather helmets and that the "damn forward pass" ruined the game.
