Joel Nielsen Contract - Kentastic - 09-19-2016 12:32 PM

I recently read somewhere that Joel Nielsen (the highest paid AD in the MAC) is in the final year of his contract at KSU. There hasn't been any news yet on whether they'll keep him. I feel if they were going to keep him, an announcement would have been made by now. What do people think? Should they? Has he done a good job?

There is waning interest in KSU Athletics as our football team has returned to its woeful ways and Men's BB is a shell of what is was. Just look at the waning interest on this board as the current activity is half of what it was 5-6 years ago.

I'd have to say do not renew his contract. Can't think of a KSU program that is better now since Joel took over for LK. Much of KSU's athletics problems have to do with lack of $$ but LK had the same problem and so do the other MAC schools.

I don't want to get into "how great our women's teams and Olympic sports still are." 90% of fans only care about football and basketball.

Joel Nielsen Contract - KSU93 - 09-22-2016 11:20 AM

If you know me from my posts it's
A-get rid of football or drop down a level
B-Joel needs to go. I am guessing that Bev just hired his replacement in Casey Cegles who came over from VCU

Under Joel
he pushed for football (being a div. 6 punter you can understand why) and that decision has backfired

None of the larger programs have become more successful

He has bungled a rape allegation and title 9. More is sure to come of that situation.

Community involvement, ticket sales and media coverage are down

Two questions
One does he hang his hat on? Surely academics but anything else?

If enrollment is increasing the budget should be increasing so where is that money going?

This is very, very interesting.

How can you be interested in football, I would assume it has hit an all-time low, seems JN has no interest in getting it right, he needs to go

Good point!!

RE: Joel Nielsen Contract - MAC tOAMU - 09-23-2016 02:13 PM

I certainly understand some of the apathy towards football, and would tend to agree the 90% of the MAC as whole might be better served at the FCS level (although I'm fully aware why this isn't happening)

That stated, the electricity and excitement around the 2012 football season was pretty darn cool.....and the power of winning, competitive football seasons has a whole hell of a lot of value for the University and ath. dept., IMO.

I agree, either you try or drop it. This one foot in approach simply embarrasses the university, from an outside-in perspective.

RE: Joel Nielsen Contract - Muskrat - 09-23-2016 03:51 PM

KSU93, your mentioning "drop football" got me thinking of a good question that has been asked from time to time over the years, and that is, "Why should athletics and schools (collegiate level and all the way down) even be linked at all? Certainly there are many other models for giving young people the opportunity to play organized sports without it being provided by schools. Obviously, it won't happen, as sports fans would be much less enamored of, say, the AAA minor league Columbus Buckeyes than they are with the name "Ohio State" attached.

Not to mention that the NFL would have to pay for player development. The shock would be too much for them.

RE: Joel Nielsen Contract - Muskrat - 09-24-2016 06:30 AM

Exactly, Burden!! BTW, I'm not suggesting that KSU drop sports, but I would sure like to see the decision to make basketball the flagship sport bear fruit fairly quickly. It is a lot easier to develop a Top 25 basketball program than a Top 25 football program. Of course, both have been there once, I believe, over the past 15 years! As to what to do about the football program, I'm at a complete loss.

The first thing, regardless of the level we want to compete at, is to give Coach Haynes his walking papers. He hasn't shown the ability to develop players or put wins on the board. Give him "Doug Martin" time and we will be the laughing stock of the MAC and NCAA for another several years.

RE: Joel Nielsen Contract - dlFLASH - 09-26-2016 11:39 AM

From what I understand, the Athletic Director had his review with President Warren this past summer and walked away from that meeting without an extension. It seems as if the writing is on the wall.

That is the best news I have heard in quite some time. This department is on fire. We need new leadership.

RE: Joel Nielsen Contract - ilovegymnast - 10-02-2016 03:33 PM

If Nielsen is on his way out could that be a reason to keep Haynes through the year so the next guy can do his own search?

RE: Joel Nielsen Contract - Muskrat - 10-02-2016 03:39 PM

I seriously doubt Haynes won't be allowed to play out his contract. I just don't think they can afford to let him go early.

RE: Joel Nielsen Contract - AlphaFlash - 10-05-2016 08:28 PM

Its not like we'll start winning as soon as Haynes leaves. He needs to consider Doug Martin's exit strategy.

Haynes is here through next year. We don't pay coaches not to coach. I am guessing a new AD will bring in a new guy. My guess on the new AD is strictly on the fact I believe Joel would have been extended by now if he was going to get one. Personally, I am disappointed, however, it is just what I think is happening.

Joel Nielsen Contract - KSU93 - 10-17-2016 11:42 AM

Joel has always slighted the other sports for football. It will be interesting on the rape allegations and potential cover up. We need a new administration to push these programs onto the next level

If this is the case, he is a miserable failure. He has at least watched the FB program go from division champ to a pathetic shadow of a D1 program.

RE: Joel Nielsen Contract - ilovegymnast - 10-17-2016 12:50 PM

At the same time he did make the hire that won them the division. So he is sitting at 50% on coaching hires for football.
