VP Biden speaking at Rice September 16 - baker-'13 - 09-08-2016 03:39 PM

To talk about the Cancer Moonshot.

News release here.

Joe Biden at Rice to discuss cancer - grol - 09-08-2016 06:57 PM

Sept 16th

I'm not sure why this needs to be in the non-sports related area. First of all, he's speaking at Rice because it's related to JFK's putting a man on the moon speech at Rice Stadium.

But secondly, the timing on Vice President Biden's speech is odd. We're hosting a volleyball tournament that weekend at Tudor (Rice hosts Yale at 1:30 pm also at Tudor and there is a morning match earlier in the day at Tudor). And then that evening at 7 pm is the Rice-Baylor game. I don't know the logistics of Biden's speech but surely it will affect parking and access to Rice sporting events both prior to and after his speech?

I mentioned this in the other thread too but this doesn't seem to make things easy for the events we're hosting that weekend.

VP Biden must be beside himself, not following his ambition and instead letting the diversity and group rights crowd decide it is time for a women (any women) for president! If that is true is there a doctor in the house?

Oh, there is! Torn between voting for the individual on their merit or for a women because the time has come? Me too, Stein or Johnson.

I opted for putting it here to be on the safe side, just in case (as it may be in the other thread) it turned into election talk (which does belong over here).

As it already has.

I wonder if there will be a shout-out to George Abbey, as a Baker Institute Fellow who was involved in the actual Moon Shot.

My kids' school (across the street from Rice Stadium) is already closing at 1PM next Friday due to expected traffic from the Rice-Baylor game. If Biden is going to be on campus at 3 that will probably make things even worse. Sounds like I need to go out of town next weekend!

Kenny the volleyball SID told me today that the Friday volleyball matches are going to be played at the Fox Gym now.

WTH is Fox Gymnasium?

It's the practice gym right to the right of Tudor.

The girls played there during the construction work at Tudor a few years back. Makes for a really up close and personal experience.

Wonder when we can get VP-elect Mike Pence to come give a speech on campus?

Would be nice to host any nationally elected official. Does Pence have any big ticket items he supports that align with our mission or the mission of the business sectors surrounding us?

That is a good question. But if not, I would think that would show lack of vision on the university's part.

How so?

Are we doing any research in gay conversion therapy or creation science?
