4th and 6 at midfield, down by 26 points, 22 minutes left, and we punt. Coaches have conclusively quit.

Let me get this right. Down 26 in the 3rd quarter, on 4th and short, with a defense that hasn't played well, we punt again? This might be the thing that ticks me off more than anything else that has carried over from last year. I'd rather go for it from our own 15 than keep punting.

Exactly. 3rd and short and we call a slow developing play in the flat? I knew exactly where we we're going as soon as our RB went in motion...

If it comes down to it in 4Q, go ahead and give the backup QBs some meaningful game experience (not just handoffs). Can't make the same mistakes over and over in that area. Well...we can but I don't believe it's good for us to do so.

RE: Gamethread: Rice Owls @ WKU Marshmallows - Hambone10 - 09-01-2016 09:36 PM

why is it when we catch THEM looking into the backfield, we throw the screen anyway instead of sneaking someone deep to keep them honest and making it an 'option'?

If they stay back, you throw the screen. If they close quick, you throw it deep.

1st and 10 for them, they go for 40

I feel kind of bad if WKU is getting really psyched about their guy. Not saying he's not good, but everyone looks like this against us

RE: Gamethread: Rice Owls @ WKU Marshmallows - Hambone10 - 09-01-2016 09:37 PM

next play for 26 more.

Yay the open receiver dropped one.

When our qb looked over the the sideline with about 28 seconds left and saw they weren't gonna run another play you could see his shoulders sink and all the energy leave. It's like we just gave up.

But it's even more obvious that Bailiff doesn't know WTF he is doing with defensive schemes. And the asinine repetition of failing schemes there just means everything else is irrelevant
We're in a weak G5 conference. "Not great" talent should be good enough to be competitive (which is to say, I agree with you).
I think over the past few years our players are bigger and probably better conditioned than before. The thing I see tonight is a definite lag in athleticism. WKU with great speed. Great quickness.

How do you explain App State tonight, in game 1 on the road in Neyland stadium in from of a hostile 100,000 UT fans? even if they lose, people are aware of them, and also remembering their Michigan upset a few years ago. Some people are googling Appalachian State to find out more about their university.

This effect is real. I cannot believe Karlgaard is okay with this direction -- it's time to try something new if we want different results, there is a mountain of evidence as to what Bailiff is at this point.

While I don;t feel bad for them, I understand what you mean. To WKU, Rice is like Wagner-level. Bailiff himself said before this game (page 1) we didn't really learn anything about our team by playing Wagner.

Yeah, I can't tell if this is a team that is better than their 24th ranked team last year, or we are that pitiful.

Fire Bailiff.

Needs to be said

Wonder if we're still "trending upwards?"

We look like little leaguers

10:30 into the 2H and WKU hasn't scored a TD yet in this half!

More positives...

Someone beat you too it.

Should we see similar performances the rest of the year, I hope the AD pulls the trigger before the season ends.

We'll see when we play Prairie View A&M.

RE: Gamethread: Rice Owls @ WKU Marshmallows - LonghornOwl - 09-01-2016 09:42 PM

February 2016 - Western Kentucky has extended the contract of coach Jeff Brohm by four years to 2019 and raised his base salary from $600,000 to $800,000, the school announced Wednesday. What does Bailiff make?
