This year's freshman class has definitely contributed more than recent classes, but at this point it is not the best freshman class in the conference. Kent State's and Buffalo's freshmen have out-performed ours, and probably Ball State's have as well. Miami, Eastern Michigan, and Central Michigan only have one impact freshman a piece, but you could make an argument for taking any one of the three over our entire class. The conference has a lot of good freshmen this year.

It has been a good freshman class for the MAC but the one kid from Buffalo didn’t outperform much of anybody against us. I’d take Kent’s big post player, though. I suspect Ms. Lockett could be right up there if we played Buffalo’s style where one player gets 20 shots a game. The fact that four frosh are getting lots of minutes is encouraging. Plus our losses are replaceable.

I ran some numbers from the top scoring freshmen, using the MAC games only (to wash out OOC where players were still gaining their footing and had varying levels of competition.) There are 5 freshmen in the top 25 in scoring. Fair (UB), Davis (CMU), Blackford (KSU), Scott (MU) and Shumate (KSU). They all play significantly more minutes than Lockett, who is averaging 10.2 points in the MAC games. Davis plays 10 minutes per game more than Lockett, for example.

When you look at points per minute played, Lockett, Scott and Shumate are all essentially equal, and Davis and Blackford are only a touch better. Only Fair stands way ahead of the others, but as H2O has said she tosses up waaay more shots than anyone else, and is only shooting 33%.

The other interesting thing is that Lockett's points per game is 3.3 points higher in MAC play than OOC. Only Davis also saw that kind of rise. Fair is down 4 points per game. So, I think Lockett's scoring ability has been on par with most of those other players.

As for Wiard, she is 20th in assists per game, even with Santucci 3rd in the league and taking most of the PT at point. Also, she has a 2.3 A/T ratio, which should be 2nd in the MAC, but for some reason they don't list her in that category. She has enough assists to make the assist list, so I can only conclude she doesn't make the A/T list because she doesn't have enough turnovers yet.

I think Lockett and Wiard are going to be good contributors. As I said before, this class appears to be our best in a few years, at least when it comes to early contributions. Nonetheless, I stick by what I said before about Kent, Buffalo, and Ball State. Blackford leads Kent in scoring and rebounding. Shumate averages 11.7 points per game and leads the team in minutes played. Kent State so far is having a better year than our Rockets, and their freshmen are contributing more. They have a third freshman who plays back-up minutes and has unimpressive stats.

It is true that Buffalo's Dyaisha Fair shoots too much and had a couple of bad games against us. Nonetheless, she is tremendously talented. She doesn't always shoot 4-18 like she did against us. Because Buffalo is offensively challenged, Fair is asked to carry a heavy load. Buffalo also has Elea Gaba, who has been inconsistent but very good at times, along with Schiffer and Christie, who have contributed off the bench.

Ball State's starting point guard, Freeman, scores nine per game and by far leads the team in assists. Ball State also gets significant contributions from Roush (6ppg), Clephane (red-shirt freshman), and Pugross. A fifth freshman gets spot minutes. Ball State, with significant contributions from four freshmen and spot minutes from a fifth, is having a much better year than Toledo.

Maybe our class will end up being better than any of these, but right now it is not among the best classes in the conference. If our hope is to be the best in the MAC, our enthusiasm about this class should be tempered a bit.

Perdue reportedly voted district player of the year.

Rockets have offered 2021 6'3 F Taylor Cullinan from Dallas, GA.

I am seeing offers from Austin Peay, East Tennessee St, Campbell, North Florida and Liberty, so no other MAC-level or higher offers so far. Highlights look to me like she's a bit of a project at this point, but can hit the three and handle the ball some.

I wish I felt more comfortable about the future of our post play, both offensively & defensively.

Ware verballed to Toledo today.

5'11 forward from Battle Creek, MI. Had an offer from WMU, unsure how many other schools. From her twitter feed, had multiple triple-doubles (points, rebounds, steals) this season, and set a single game scoring record with 47 points, and then later broke it scoring 51.

School’s all-time scorer boys or girls and leading rebounder. Looks good on paper!

I saw a Wayne State offer as well. Given her statistics and the impressive highlights shown on her twitter page, I'm surprised she didn't have more and better offers.

Rockets coaches are busy on the recruiting trail. High school sophomore Allison Basye from Chillicothe, Ohio, was offered. She scored 41 points in a game this year.

Also, on Ware, I saw that, in addition to Western Michigan and Wayne State, she had offers from Oakland and Eastern Michigan.

Better to lose her to Wayne State than Wright State. We’d never hear the end of it.

https://asgrbasketball.com/mid-american-recruiting-2020-class-rankings/

Above is the link to a recruiting site's ranking of 2020 classes. Makira Cook, who has the highest ranking and is listed as going to Miami, is now committed to Dayton. She switched after the Miami coach left after last year. Mickayla Perdue is not yet listed among Toledo's players. I'm not sure how much value there is here, but I do think it is accurate that Bowling Green and Ball State each landed a promising recruit, and Ohio and Kent State have promising transfers from the Big 10.

That site doesn't think much of our class (It was last updated in October). I often complain about our recruiting with our advantages, but it really just comes down to the head coach. As an example, Kent and Akron have the worst arenas in the MAC, but have dominated men's basketball over the last 20 years. Maybe we should have taken the $30M spent on the Savage renovation and bought the best coaching staff available, if in fact that is the end game.

Idowu was named her conference player of the year, and Perdue District player of the year.

Just takes one excellent recruiter to sell the University, the BB program and the vision for the program.

Rockets have offered 2020 5'7 PG Tanyuel Welch from Indianapolis North Central

Plays on the same club team as Khera Goss. Only other offer I can find quickly is Indiana State so far.
