WBB Recruiting - northcoastRocket - 07-31-2016 12:57 PM

Rarely see tweets from WBB prospects about offers, but saw this week that Peoria IL '17 PG Jailynn Lawson tweeted that she received an offer from UT. Said it was her 4th offer.

Some impressive Highlights:

Quote:Lawson starting at point guard would be a pleasure for any coach. She’s a bona fide Division I prospect with a scholarship offer from Bradley and interest from Arkansas, Seton Hall, Clemson and Indiana.

UT graduates 2 next year, and they are both bigs. Also, we already had 2 verbals for '17 guards in Copeland and Washington-Polk. Wonder if those two are still solid.

According to her twitter and Prospect Nation, '17 Georgia PG Tatyana Davis has verballed to UT. Can't find too much info, but here's a short highlight reel:

Tidbit on Davis. Leading scorer on state championship team this past year. Scored 32 in the championship game.

How many PG's will we have?

RE: WBB Recruiting - northcoastRocket - 08-02-2016 07:39 PM

Still a little confused on the prospects. That's 3 guards who have verballed for '17, when the team is graduating 2 bigs.

Yeah, Seems like we will be able to field at least 6. I wonder if Copeland and Polk-Washington are still solid verbals.

Anyone with any info?

Just double checked the new roster, and notice that Akia Frett is not listed. Hmm.

i wish we had more size on this roster.

Frett has signed with Langston University of the NAIA.

She's a 5'9" PG & SG.

School is located in Madison, GA

Maybe Copeland is odd women out. To me she hasn't progressed much since her freshmen year.

Another '17 verbal on twitter. Another guard. Zaria Wright from Concord, NC. Her highlights from hudl would seen to indicate she is a scorer. Plays for a accomplish HS team. I think I saw they were runner up state champs her sophomore year? Not sure about last year. Averaged 26 points, 6 boards and 4 assists as a JR. Season high 45 points. Has a recruiting rating at ESPN of 90, and listed as 3.5 stars on prospect nation, although I don't know that those really mean anything for HS girls with the lack of consistent info that exists. Had an offer from EMU, and prospect nation indicated she had previously verballed to them, but don't know if that's true. Not sure if there were other offers.

So, we have 4 verbals (all guards) now for 3 available slots. So, clearly at least one of the early verbals would seem to be out of the picture now.

Sadly, "verbal" commitments seem to mean less as each year passes. Maybe this is less of an issue (admirably) for female athletes. On paper these past few verbals certainly look like solid players, so my guess is we're at the "go after the best players we think we have a 50/50 shot of actually signing" phase, knowing that the chances all of these ladies actually do sign is slim. Still wish we were able to land another true post player to help Kaayla out after Sophie graduates.

Instead of filling team needs it seems like we throw out a bunch of offers and whoever verbals first wins. I understand we don't have the luxury of being very selective but their has to be a better way of finding players that fit into your team rather than just grabbing whoever says yes.

Based on the high school statistics and reviews from a recruiting site mentioned earlier, I'm surprised that you come to the conclusion that that we're "grabbing whoever says yes."

Speed kills and it has killed us. We have a couple bigs and Cullop seems to be loading up on speed to compete with the EMUs of the world.

RE: WBB Recruiting - northcoastRocket - 08-28-2016 08:06 AM

Pictures posted on twitter of Copeland, Davis & Wright together on official visit to UT.

RE: WBB Recruiting - northcoastRocket - 10-06-2016 07:21 AM

Recent tweets indicated 2 '18 verbals for UT:

Ariel Cummings from Ottawa Hills, 6'3 PF/C ... niece of former NBA player Terry Cummings
Teneea Heston from Hilliard, OH, G ... haven't found much other info yet

Lexi Lance, a 6-0 wing from Wordsworth High has also given a verbal for the 2018 class.

Last season Lance was All-Ohio Honorable mention on a team that was loaded with talent and won the Division-I State Championship.
