I fully understand that you never win anything on paper, but on the playing field. Having said that, I am going to enjoy the "print" for awhile. This could have the makings of one hell of a class.

Probably coincidence, but the thought crossed my mind as to whether Mehkel's HS coach, Roger Holmes, may be a cousin of Jonathan Holmes, to help explain how we made the recruiting connection to Huntington Beach.....

One bad loss in a tournament and the season is done. That, the injury monster, and/or academic issues are the only things keeping this squad from a berth in the next two years. Can't dispute the talent or coaching...I honestly don't know how any CAA team can hang with the 3 bigs we'll have in 2019.

Delete this post immediately, for the love of God. You are clearly way overserved on Kool-Aid.

Can we get Beancounter's title to read "Kool-Aid bartender"?

RE: 2018 Basketball Recruiting - bubbadog57 - 05-25-2018 05:36 AM

Perhaps this is the first time we CAN drink the Kool-Aid....this group is the real thing.

Let's hope Ms. Huge is putting added emphasis on the men's basketball support structure in place to complement and take advantage of the anticipated rising tide, with marketing, scheduling, funding plans to frame the program, and the great job Tony and staff and players are doing. Build it and they will come.

Will be interesting to see how this class effects the 2019 class. Recruits may shy away due to a perceived restricted playing time window, or it may afford the staff opportunities with an even more talented group. It's not just about facilities, etc. Players want to play with the best they can get associated with.

Think this class deserves it's own "Fab Five plus one" nickname.

Can’t help but assume that the recent announcement of COA being implemented this year really strengthened this class.

I agree completely. COA was a must.

Found recent full game footage from Mehkel's AAU team play last month. Mehkel is young and very raw, and has a lot of development to be able to compete at the CAA level. Expect he will get there, but I don't see him being able to contribute this coming season. Unless we are able to finesse a last minute grad transfer, I imagine we will see a lot of Paul in the post this year. I wouldn't even be surprised to see Quinn, despite the height limitation, get the opportunity to fill in with his physicality and potential to force his defender to come out and guard him.

Nate had the benefit of a post grad year. Mehkel would greatly enhance his Tribe career, if a potential redshirt year doesn't get burned. #32 in orange with a short haircut in the video.

In a perfect world, we could get that grad transfer & Redshirt Mehkel.

I don't think that's very recent. It looks like pictures of him from three years ago. The more recent videos show a much more muscled and athletic player (plus a lot more hair)

Here is a picture of him in 2015

You are right and I stand corrected. The hair threw me off.

I thought it was old at 1st too. You could generally track Mehkels videos by his hair. He is definitely a project and we are banking on his potential. He is absolutely a perfect candidate for a redshirt. The tools are there though, and with competition and development, I think he will be a very productive player here.

RE: 2018 Basketball Recruiting - Tribeheart - 06-06-2018 06:06 PM

I think the point being that as excited as we all are about this class' potential, it is not the norm for any freshman to play a significant role on a good, experienced team. We'd be watching a future Tribe HOFer if one happens to emerge.

RE: 2018 Basketball Recruiting - LeadBolt - 06-06-2018 06:46 PM

This class has amazing potential, and represent a higher upside over time. They are not of the caliber of talent bought and paid for by the big boys that play the 1 and done game. They will imho outshine the recruited talent of some of those 1 and done schools in 2-3 years, but they probably won't outshine them n 2018-19.
