Did nothing at Texas, but would be close to the highest ranked recruit we ever had.

Can't open the link. Who is it and what's their deal?

Your post says “ he’s hearing from ODU”. I look at the school names on that list and don’t see it happening for the Monarchs.

Sometimes I see why Blaine went for the under recruited types and coached them up.

Yeah absolutely. Blaine developed players and his teams' success showed that. Hell we even beat teams that were better than us. JJ is definitely a poor recruiter. He got some players this year but really not a whole lot outside of these past 2 classes.

Frank the tank and Bazemore immediately come to mind. It used to be I took it for granted the team would be better each year if for no other reason than BT would improve the kids play each year. You could actually see it.

Not so much anymore.

Hard to get minutes when Bamba is in front of you. Man, did they underperform or what. 6th in the big 12 with Bamba? Awful.

In their defense, the Big 12 was probably the best conference in basketball this past year.

No arguments from me there and that's not even taking Andrew Jones leukemia diagnosis into the equation.

But still, they had a rare talent and didn't do much with him.

It's funny, I am tempted to complain about JJ and staff seemingly reaching out to every kid in America, then I remember what I used to say when BT was here. I think that getting your name attached to all these tweets with higher profile teams can actually help raise your profile over time. You need a coach who can close the deal, of course.

RE: Men's Basketball Recruiting: 2018 - EverRespect - 04-24-2018 08:34 AM

I have to think we'll get somebody just based on supply and demand. It might not be Tim Duncan, but we should be able to grab a Brandan Stith or two. I mean we aren't terrible, have a proven senior PG and a proven senior SF with plenty of talent at SG as well and all you have to do to start is beat out 3 true freshmen and Aaron Carver. We will certainly have a chance at playing in the postseason and any big that comes here will have a chance of being showcased. I can't for the life of me believe this is a difficult sale. I know we won't beat out many P5s just by the nature, but would have to think 2018-2019 ODU team would be one of the more desireable mid major situations for a PF/C to transfer into.

What names come to mind as players that have not gotten better?

I made the mistake of bragging to my friends at Texas how good a coach Shaka was and what a great hire he was. Now they are telling me he sucks and his ass is fast moving to a very hot seat. If he doesn't turn this thing around this year look for him to be let go. Before all the "Let's hire him at ODU starts...it will never happen for many reasons...mostly money"

Don't let the VCU hatred cloud your judgement. He would be great for this program.

Agreed.

Besides, think of what VCU's reaction would be. Priceless.

He'll likely have to fail at a couple more P5 opportunities before he drops down to another midmajor job.

Agreed. He can still dine off what he did at VCU, plus he's recruited well at Texas. No chance he doesn't get at least one more power program.

Shaka is a hell of a recruiter. I think he sucks at X's and O's but he sure as hell motivates his players and they rally FOR HIM. Something JJ does not do.

I don't think he is a bad Xs and Os coach so much as a system coach. Being a strict system coach requires 100% buy-in from the team. Much more difficult to do with a team full of 4- and 5-star recruits that could go anywhere and want to showcase their individual talents to the NBA than with a bunch of 2-star recruits that are just happy playing D1 basketball on a full scholarship. Some coaches are just better at being a mid-major coach.
