RE: Men's Basketball Recruiting: 2018 - jumpshooter - 04-19-2018 11:44 AM

I've become a wait and see. You know, I talked to Hueitt's mom in Charleston and she told me he'd been offered by Ga Tech and Louisville. So I'm thinking "This kid's going to contribute." Hopes up, dead wrong. With all of these guys from now on, I'm gonna have to see it first. I hope Reece is a MJ and Kalu is Wes Unseld -- but I'm not holding my breath

I suspect that most fans have done exactly that.

Which answers your earlier question for why the reserved excitement for Mr. Reece.

I'm with you. If we have a top 150 guy, I will be excited. Beyond that, Its always a wait and see.

RE: Men's Basketball Recruiting: 2018 - ODU_NYG - 04-19-2018 12:18 PM

I'm not even wait and see. I'm in the "they won't play/they won't be good camp." The year of ODU FB, NY Giants, ODU Hoops, Philly winning SB, to now the Nationals starting off slow - has left me in a pretty dark, black hole of sports optimism.

You don't have to be simply excited for him next year, but excited that he will be at ODU and hope that it will be 4-5 years. Him at ODU is a great thing.

THe expectations for Hueitt and Godwin were unrealistic for some reason. These guys were low-to- mid 3 star guys with good veterans playing ahead of them (Stith/Haynes) and another talented recruit with a year of practice under his belt (Green).

Wade is essentially in the same spot this year. But, while my expectations aren't for Reece to get a ton of playing time, I do think he will contribute next year. Not only is it a position of need, but he has more talent than anyone we have at that spot. Ekikpe is very talented as well, but he appears to be very raw (JMO). Im not really expecting much from him next year.

If he's as good as advertised, he could just as easily be a one and transfer.

One of our incoming freshman can play D, and I would think he wouldn't take as long to get up to JJ standards - Jason Wade. I know we are guard heavy it seems, but Wade was always put on the opposing team's best scorer to lock them down this past year.

It's a tough spot for him. He's a good defender and can also score. He has a good frame, but he's in a position where there are several guys ahead of him. He may be a good redshirt possibility I guess.

@AdamZagoria: Niksa Nikolic a 6'8" , 235 -pound F. from Southeastern CC just committed to Iona, per source. Had offers from Utah State and Old Dominion.

SEcond @IonaGaelsMBB commit in 2 days.

The real problem here is not only JJ is a poor recruiter(closer) but he has surrounded himself with assistant coaches who are poor recruiters. The latest addition Jefferson went overseas and brought back our new power forward game changer 6 ft 3 in greek kid. WTF

Maybe we should have hired the Iona coach when we had the chance. 05-stirthepot

Kind of amazing someone hasn't hired him away yet. In his 8 years there, they have been to the NCAA tourney 5 times, NIT twice and the CIT once (his first year).

It is. But maybe he's not applying to any jobs. He has never been a coach (of any kind) outside of NY.

I would assume ADs actively recruit their coaches as opposed to waiting to see who applies. The application should be a mere formality. I know I wouldn't waste my time on a lengthy, government generated application unless I knew there was strong interest.

I wasn't talking about submitting his resume and a cover letter. I was talking about telling his agent he was interested in pursuing opportunities outside of the state of NY.

With as many trips as he's had to the NCAAs, you know there has been outside interest in him. But his name rarely comes up in coaching searches.

Here's a piece from Rothstein on Cluess. It's clear, he ain't leaving NY for just any job;

He's a 59-year old guy who's never coached outside NYC and has made a comfortable living dominating a low-level conference. Even if the ODU job opened up tomorrow, I doubt it'd be a good fit for either party.

Yep. Continuing to slam our heads into brick walls when we can’t beat anyone better than us. Hell yeah.

RE: Men's Basketball Recruiting: 2018 - T-Mac - 04-22-2018 01:42 PM

I have a buddy who refs bball in St. Louis. I asked him about Joe Reece. He couldn't speak highly enough about him. He said he was a great kid. Very humble. Really hard worker. Said his offense is college ready right now, but he could use a college weight lifting program to beef up. Said he can play defense well at the rim, but he'd struggle to keep bigger bodied guys from backing him down. He thinks we got a steal and said the sky is the limit for him once his body matures more.
