Someone on the VCU board said he and Nick Sherod would end up at ODU, which would be a hell of a transfer pull. Wouldn't do much for next season, but two of top three UR players in time for 2019-2020 would be potentially excellent.

How many guards do we need though?

They wouldn't play until 2019, the first season without BJ and Caver.

Still have Xavier, Justice, Wade, Marquis and whoever comes in the 2019 class. Could be a crowded wing with 2 more.

True, but I think to some degree you take the best players that you can get your hands on and make it work. Plus as Giles points out, they're pretty good rebounders (I think Buck led the Spiders with 7 a game last season), so that gives you some flexibility. And unlike many of the guards you list, we have a lot better read on whether Sherod and Buckingham can play at this level because they did for two years in the A-10 (acknowledging that last year's Spiders sucked on ice).

If that’s EJs son, it would be cool to have a legacy player. Would also be crappy of UR to not let him go where his dad played since it’s not in conference

The issue isn't UR, it's the A-10. They have a rule that forces intra-conference transfers to sit out two seasons instead of one. Even with having a redshirt available, it would leave him with just the one season to play at VCU, or any other A-10 school.

???? I don't understand this response. EJ's dad went to ODU, not VCU. His grandad went to VCU?

It's only natural to want better things for your children.

Side note - that's a whack rule. Besides I thought it was fairly common to block your fellow conference schools

Misread the post. Not sure what UR would do with Sherod since he hasn't asked for his release, though it's been hinted at, but ODU barred Porter from going there so it wouldn't shock me if they acted in kind.

I thought Porter was free to go to anybody that wanted him. Isn't he a graduate transfer? I know it has been stated publicly that Hueitt was blocked from going to W & M, Richmond, VCU, or any C-USA school as a condition of his release.

That may be. I know ODU shut the door on someone transferring to certain schools, and yeah I guess they can't really keep Porter from going wherever he wants as a grad transfer so it must be Hewitt. That's what I get for going off the top of my head.

Yes, it was Hewitt. Porter can get technical fouls wherever he chooses.

If UR remains on our schedule, then I would think ODU isn't an option for anyone from there.

Yes, Grandfather played at VCU and in the pros for a while.

Very true, but both guys are pretty stout guys that rebound ok. They could be probably be used on the court alongside 2 traditional guards.

I'll be stoked if we get either, just trying to envision how different this team will look with 6 or more talented guards. Would be quite the escape from the first 5 years of JJ ball.

Would be interesting if UR didn't block them from transferring here.

I am pretty sure if UR dismissed him from the team, they cannot block him from going to certain schools.

Looks like ODU at least offered as a senior.

Prediction: He will end up in an ODU uniform.

Just curious, how educated is this prediction?

I'll just say this...Jeff is a HUGE fan of him.

RE: Men's Basketball Recruiting: 2018 - Gilesfan - 04-19-2018 10:37 AM

I guess 247 updated the rankings and put out a top 247 list. Reece just missed it coming in at 258. I believe that puts him in as a top 5 recruit in the conference.

Im not sure people (ODU fans here) are as excited about Reece as they should be. There seemed to be more excitement for Godwin/Huiett, who were much lower ranked than Reece.

Probably a swing in the opposite direction. That's the case with me. I got hyped with Godwin/Heuitt and they barely played. So my expectations about recruitment ratings have swung the other direction - will wait and see. I know that doesn't really make a lot of sense, but I just don't feel like being let down again.

RE: Men's Basketball Recruiting: 2018 - Old Dominion - 04-19-2018 10:46 AM

Based on todays climate of transfers, I don't see much reason to get to excited about a kid who hasn't gotten on campus, much less proven he can play Defense to JJ's satisfaction.

If he's as good as advertised, he could just as easily be a one and transfer.

I excited for both big men coming in this year. I'm just not sure what to expect as freshmen.

Unless we get something in a grad transfer, both may be starting this coming year.

Anyone can transfer at any time. Its todays climate. Might as well adjust expectations.
