We are getting on a lot of top players final lists. Next step is to actually sign one or two of them.

I've said for years that what the program needs most is one stud to accept the challenge of elevating he program to the next level, the way Mark Aguirre did at DePaul, Pat Ewing did at Georgetown, Ralph at UVA, McMillen at Maryland and on and on. If that happens, and especially if he's a local, the floodgates open. Am I optimistic of that happening in this climate? Hopeful would be a better word. None of our MBB coaches have been able to pull it off, and I truly believe that's why BT went to a project system with guys like Hassell. You can only beat your head against a wall so many times . . .

Thank you odu09. I appreciate your assistance in clarifying that. Looks like a strong list of schools. I noticed on his Twitter account that some other schools such as Wake Forrest and VCU have offered as well.

I suspect that this will be another instance of where ODU (Jones) went after a highly sought prospect that ultimately goes elsewhere. I support Jones on going after this sort, but he needs to have a better back-up plan than to then see who shows up on a transfer list since he to date always misses out on these big man freshman recruits. Nothing wrong with getting a solid big that is lesser recruited like Frank Hassell and developing him with a red shirt and freshman year.

I agree with your comments.

ODU has had some very good big men over the years, but all too often the difference between ODU and other (major) schools is that the major schools not only get the very good big man, they also have a very good supporting cast on the court with him. Sometimes ODU will have a very good big man with one or two other pretty solid players to go with him and the major schools will have three or four solid players.

At least twice in the past I have felt that when ODU played UNC we had the best player on the floor. Once was with Chris Gatling, and the other was with Cal Bowdler. UNC had big men that were nearly as good, but the bigger problem is that they had more than one of them of that quality and we didn't.

Chris Gatling was a transfer btw.

Yeah, I know. I think he came in from Pittsburgh.

Wilson Washington (Maryland), Sylvester Charles (Wake Forrest), Joe Bunn (NC A&T), Trey Freeman (Elon), ....... I certainly don't think that taking select transfers is a bad thing. I just believe the program would be better if it was much more of a mix between freshmen and transfers regarding the big men than it has been under Coach Jones. This coaching staff doesn't appear to have the same issue in recruiting guards where they have had a good mix of both freshmen and transfers.

I don't think we should go that route, with all due respect to the legacy issue, for a 2 star shooting guard. If we're going to start firing coaches or staffers to get players via their dad's we should hold out for 4 star palyers.

You pull that too many times, esp. at our level, it could become difficult to attract good asst. coaches.

RE: 2018 Old Dominion Basketball Recruiting Den - jumpshooter - 06-09-2017 08:54 AM

I don't think Ronnie even coaches at the HS level. It would make no sense to hire him to hire him at the D-1 level to do something he's never done anywhere before.

The dilemma for parents like Sherrod and Wade is simple but complex: They certainly would love for their kids to follow them to their alma mater. At the same time, they're dealing with young adults entitled to make their own decisions about where to go to college, and they deserve to have that freedom of choice.

Theres not a school on the list we shouldn't be able to compete against for recruits. The fact that he's a legacy player should give us an edge.

Beg to differ. Wichita State and VCU are better programs right now.

Right now, sure. And I didn't say we should win every battle against those two, just that we should be able to go toe to toe with them and win one every now and then. And other than those two and Mass, I would hope we would win out over a lot of them.

RE: 2018 Old Dominion Basketball Recruiting Den - mac - 06-10-2017 09:22 AM

It all comes down to three things. Relationship with whoever is doing the recruiting of a player. Perceived playing time. And tv exposure. And teams like W-State and VCU are in the NCAA tourney every year, lots of exposure, plus on tv all the time during regular season too.

That's my take.
