You are right that NCAA's hands are going to be tied. They are going to be tied just like there are with UNC. At this point, the NCAA has no authority to do much of anything.

The UNC scandal is peanuts and more complex legally than this. This includes assistant coaches funneling hundreds of thousands of dollars to students to commit.

I would argue that the UNC scandal is FAR worse than this one.

Maybe ethically, but not criminally.

True. I am definitely speaking from an ethics perspective.

I love that banging a coworkers wife and then paying extortion to keep it quiet and then buying prostitutes for high school recruits weren't enough to sink pitino

But paying recruits money under the table (something EVERYONE already knew was happening) and Louisville was like "fire him immediately"!!!

Ridiculous. Of course this was going on, everyone knows Shaq got rich playing in college!

I bet the bcs schools skate because of course they will, it's the NCAA.

I believe the FBI's involvement made all of the difference.

Love hearing you whine about UNC at ever chance possible. 03-zzz 07-coffee3

RE: Men's Basketball Recruiting: 2018 - odu09 - 09-28-2017 07:39 AM

UNC scandal involved dabbling around with classes to make it easier for the athletes: NCAA violation.

This scandal involving Adidas, Louisville and the rest is dealing with bribery, extortion, and fraud: criminal violation. Hence the FBI involvement, not NCAA. There are real investigators on this one, not the 'investigators' for the NCAA.

Two very, very different circumstances. This is much "worse" than the UNC scandal.

RE: Men's Basketball Recruiting: 2018 - Monarchblue - 09-28-2017 08:13 AM

So, you think that giving kids money is worse than denying kids an education at an institution whose one mission is to educate kids? They failed those kids and then undertook a MASSIVE cover up that was traced all the way to the NC government. I am sorry, but ethically, I am a lot less saddened about these assistant coaches and slimey AAU/sneaker people passing out money, which EVERYBODY already knew they were all doing, than about a school taking advantage of kids, many of whom were disadvantaged, because winning a championship was more important than changing those kids lives through the education they promised.

Love that you are mad someone is calling out the worst cheating scandal in the history of college athletics.

RE: Men's Basketball Recruiting: 2018 - odu09 - 09-28-2017 08:17 AM

Yes, I do believe extortion and fraud is worse than putting an athlete in a fake class. There are athletes who still worked to get their education and I bet they are great contributors to society. And then there are athletes who went through school easy in order to focus on their sports, and who knows what they do now. Would those particular students be in a different place today if they took harder classes? I doubt it.

Saying "everybody does it" is not a valid excuse or makes it any better.

In both cases, I hate it all.

The NCAA let them get away with it too. Thats worse than the cheating.

As a Tarhole fan I imagine you have plenty of whine to go with that cheese. Don't be greedy.

Too bad football is off this weekend. Guess he will be taking in the soccer game against UK and day 1 of bball practice?

RE: Men's Basketball Recruiting: 2018 - mac - 09-29-2017 11:22 AM

That's a strong list of competitors. Looks like the new ODU assistant in charge of overseas recruiting is making a strong case. Playing time will sure be available for this lad.
