They seem to be worried about taking a shot that is not in some set system or missing and getting yanked and chastised. Scorers and play makers have to flexibly and a clear mind with no fear to be effective.

Which scorers are you referring to? Color me intrigued to see how Hueitt is used.

Haynes, Kah, Green, Caver, Fields before he was forced to leave because JJ squashed him. He had better let Hueitt have the green light and not pull him when he misses or takes a bad shot that doesn't fit his style.

Green hasnt played. Fields is a walk on that shot way too much. Caver shoots at will. Kah/Haynes were scorers vs much weaker competition. Its not like Dean Smith supressing MJ, here.

Wait, yes I did watch Bryant Stith play. Sorry if I got his position mixed up after 30 or so years. That had very little to do with the point I was making in responding to the post I copied. Neither son is playing at the level to which Bryant played while in college which was pretty high.

Heck, 30 years from now you might remember shooting guard B.J. Stith playing power forward at ODU if you're still around. Then again with Jeff as the coach who knows, maybe he will be playing there before he graduates.

Fields played in 27 or 28 games and only shot around 45 times for the season. I'm sure that total includes a few times when as the point guard he had to get a shot up before the shot clock expired to prevent a turnover. That's one of the drawbacks of the slow, prodding, deliberate offense Jones has the team playing.

RE: Men's Basketball Recruiting: 2018 - Gilesfan - 09-03-2017 02:50 PM

Fields shot the ball in 18% of the possessions he was in at a rate of 26% makes. That is why too high.

FTW, Haynes shot 23% of time at 30% rate.

I remember quite a few games that Fields would jack up BAD shots..... and not because the shot clock was winding down.

Haynes had the green light to shoot a couple of games -hell it appeared in a couple different instances he was the option on the reversal- but would end up 1 do 7 or 1 for 8.

Personally I think Haynes was out of shape last year AND Fields thought he was better than he was. Kah was a nonfactor so I'll reserve judgment on him until this year

Haynes/Fields were certainly guilty of bad shots. When you are a good sooter, you get some slack.

Both fall in the catagory of scorers... I wouldn't say either is a particularly good shooter

Both fall in the category of guys that shoot a lot that should not.

Averaging a little over 1.5 shots per game is hardly the definition of shooting a lot. Had he (Fields) shot any less he essentially would not have shot at all.

He shot the ball over 18% of the possessions he played. For a point guard that shot at a low percentage.

They are good shooters but when you are worried about if the shot you are taking is ok with JJ or your afraid of getting chewed out or bench you mentally hesitate change your rhythm thus lowering your shooting %. Fields and Haynes are scorers and are aggressive offensively. Fields left because of JJ heavy hand didn't allow any flexibility. I hope JJ changes or he will ruin Green, Hueitt, Godwin.

And he was 20% of the personnel on the court in the possessions he played. When it has fit your stance you have claimed that the sample size was too small to make a firm judgement. Well, his sample size of 45 shots is small.

Sample size is certainly small. Do you think a walk on true freshman should be taking that many shots?

Neither Fields or Haynes were scared to shoot, which is why they shot such a low percentage. Its hard to argue 30% ahooters are good shooters

Using the same logic, how would you describe a coach whose teams continually shoot a poor percentage?
