You just made me smile. If we could get things going like we had them in the early to mid 80s, there would be a lot more talk on here about why the squad is good vs what we currently deal with...constant battles about how much other posters don't know about the game.

I could not agree with your sentiments more than I do. +2 for the smile.

I'm so tired of reading dumb ass posts about how we don't need big players anymore because of "how college basketball is trending". Please STFU

Nobody has said "we don't need big players." Try comprehending instead of the insults.

We don't "have" to have some big 6-11 center to compete. To compensate for how the game is evolving, we need mobile big men; no matter what their listed heights are.

You're right. To say that those guys that year "weren't even good" is pretty dumb. Keeping in mind that we are mainly talking about the guys inside (Power Forward & Center - Gattison & West), and those two starters on that team both went on to multi-year NBA careers and are among a very small number of players that have had their jerseys retired by ODU. The Sun Belt Conference during that period was vastly superior to the modern day C-USA.

If that team could be brought back in their 1982 - 1983 form to represent this year's ODU team most of us would be doing back flips over it. I'd even be willing to bet that Jones would love to have that group.

That would be fine if those 6'7 big men were not really 6'5.5, and if they could shoot from more than 12 feet, and if both of our bigs were not undersized.

Sorry to contribute to keeping this thread off track but this guy thinks talk of height are bulls**t. What we need is one guy to protect the rim on one end and a skilled player with low post moves and good passing skills. Doesn't matter if he is 6'7" or 6'11".

I hope Trey Porter can grow into this kind of player.

RE: 2018 Old Dominion Basketball Recruiting Den - Gilesfan - 07-21-2017 08:00 PM

Stith and Porter are both good rim protectors. Porter is more skilled probably but Stith is more of a bruiser. People on here seems to underrate Brandan, I think the injury played a big role in his play last year (that wasnt bad). He plays well at 6-7 bc of his wingspan

We need Kah to be a legit 4 man more than we need to worry about Porter/Stith.

RE: 2018 Old Dominion Basketball Recruiting Den - blewbyu - 07-21-2017 08:04 PM

The Paul Webb coached team with West, Gattison and company was the best team ODU ever put on the court. Paul Webb hands down was our best coach ever. We need height in the middle and all over for that matter. These post about shorter is better and six seven is better than six nine etc. etc. Basketball is a game played by athletic big guys. To say different is just plan wrong.

RE: 2018 Old Dominion Basketball Recruiting Den - Gilesfan - 07-21-2017 08:11 PM

Relevant to the conversation: Steve Kerr says Draymond Green is 6-5.

You have been JJs lead cheerleader on why Porter and Stith can't play together, and why Kah should not play, now you are hanging your argument on those two things you argued against. You are all over the place trying to defend the JJ train wreck.

Uh, that doesnt contradict anything I said. We need Kah this year bc of Mcclinton injury. He obviously wasnt ready last year but has to be this year.

When have I said Porter and Stith are going to play well together? Thats the whole reason we need Kah to step up.....unless they figure out a way to play together.

Adding a post that has nothing to do about recruiting certainly helps on that front, huh?

There's a common denominator to every recruiting thread that gets derailed, and it's you and/or RRR. Interesting you have that in common with the one poster you blocked. Maybe consider opening up a different thread to talk about things outside of ODU recruiting, or post in 2017.

RE: 2018 Old Dominion Basketball Recruiting Den - Prideofalion - 07-21-2017 08:46 PM

The "program height" conversation is hilarious to me. As if ODU measures all their players differently than the rest of the entire basketball world. The same player ODU lists as 6'7" (Brandan Stith) would be listed the same height at another school (ECU). Kent Bazemore is still listed at 6'5". I just find it funny that all of our 6'7 guys are really 6'5.

I dont get the obsession with thread titles, but I understand. Though an easy fix is to just block me.

No, this is a pinned recruiting thread and I agree it should be mostly info/facts about recruits, some commentary is fine but take long winded arguments somewhere else.

Thanks for the feedback on that. I was referring to what he would play in college. 6'-7" is a good size for a small forward. We should be looking for bigger than that for the other two positions (PF/C).

This type of thinking is antique.

And this type of thinking is dumb. See recent results from ODU playing with a 6'-7" center if you need proof. See recent NCAA Tournament results if you need additional proof. Guess you are think you are smarter than the coaches at Kansas, Duke, UNC, Kentucky, Gonzaga, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Syracuse, Miami, etc., etc., etc. Newsflash, they don't go out and recruit 6'-7" Power Forwards and Centers even though according to you it is "antique" to do otherwise. Wow (smh).

How big are Kris Jenkins, Darryl Reynolds, Jayson Tatum, Jordan Bell, Bonzie Colson, Miles Bridges, Tyler Lydon, Kamari Murphy, Ethan Happ, Nigel Hayes, Isaiah Hicks, Justin Jackson, etc, etc.?

You just named a bunch of teams with big guys that are between 6-6 and 6-8; some 6-9.

All of those guys you listed, can step out and be a threat from deep or are elite defenders (Reynolds). I like Brandan, but offensively, it's tough to call him a threat right now.

Edit: I apologize for contributing to this thread being derailed. I will not respond with anything other than recruiting news.

Let's start the countdown! He'll probably have a new coach here at ODU by then.

No chance he comes to ODU. Already has offers from UVA, VT, OK ST and VCU.
