I went stag to my prom because I had enough self-esteem not to guilt trip a celebrity.
The first two ask out a celebrity to prom requests were fun. Now it is annoying and a desperate call for attention.

In fairness, there were probably kids back then who would have wanted to bring their cat, but they wouldn't have felt comfortable expressing themselves in that manner...and there was no social media to give him a sense of accomplishment and support that millions of random people viewed or "liked" his picture.

I get the feeling that this was probably just a big joke. I think it's more likely that he was dared, lost a bet or was the class clown and thought it would be funny than the likelihood of him actually taking a pet to prom.
