Quote:Tucker filled us in on why he decided to give the NIU Huskies his early commitment.

"I really tried to step away from the fact that I live in DeKalb and look at things if I wanted to get away from home for college. In the end it's just too good of an opportunity for me to pass up at NIU. I love NIU football and even when I stepped by and looked at everything I still saw myself playing for NIU. "

Look for Tucker to now become another recruiter for the NIU Huskies.

"I definitely want to help us bring in some kids in this class. I've already have talked to some of the coaches about that and I'll be calling some of those kids soon to talk."

Quote:"NIU just feels like the right place for me," according to Warren. "I just like everything they have to offer and I was ready so I committed."

Warren, who was beginning to add offers and gain real recruiting traction this spring explained why he decided to end his recruiting process and pledge to the NIU Huskies.

"I just like everything that NIU has to offer. They have a great football team and they win games. NIU is pretty close to home so my friends and family can come see me play in college. I also just like how close the players and the coaches are at NIU. Everyone is on the same page at NIU."

Warren who was offered as a cornerback/saftey by the Huskies is excited to play in the NIU defense.

"I like the NIU defense a lot. It's a good fit for me and they play real fast and aggressive style just like we do at Phillips."

Warren made a few other visits this spring but none of those schools compared to NIU.

"I visited some other schools but they didn't feel the same way as NIU did to me." - edgytim.com

Northern Illinois has gotten on the map thanks to superb dual-threat quarterback play from the likes of Chandler Harnish, Jordan Lynch, and Drew Hare who have each thrown for over 4,400 yards and rushed for 1,200 yards in their respective NIU careers.

“The quarterback has the option to run or pass a lot,” Hall said of the Northern Illinois offensive system. - The D Zone

watched both highlight tapes. Both kids play like they love the game. Warren is a great tackler and ball hawk too. Like the "Barb" addition as well.

2017 Official Verbal Thread - NIU32 - 04-25-2016 10:07 PM

Bob NarangContact Reporter

Dexter Warren has already learned the value of being a good concealer.

The Phillips junior safety gave a verbal commitment to Northern Illinois football, and head coach Rod Carey, following Saturday's spring game.

But the 6-foot, 175-pound Warren, a two-star recruit, didn't publicly reveal his commitment until Monday afternoon via Twitter. Warren said he selected Northern Illinois over offers from Ball State and Central Michigan. The Huskies are coming off an 8-6 season and played in their program-record eighth straight bowl game.

"I sat down with Coach Carey and just told him I would like to commit to NIU on Saturday," Warren said. "I liked everything about NIU. It's close to home, so all my family can see my games and watch me play. I liked how they run their defense and their coaches. I liked the others schools and visited them, but not as much as NIU."

Warren, a transfer from St. Rita, made an immediate impact for Phillips this season. He started at safety, and tallied one tackle and an interception in Phillips' 51-7 victory over Belleville Althoff in the Class 3A state championship game. The Wildcats finished the season with a 14-0 record, and became the first Chicago Public League team to win a state title.

"Dexter has a huge upside," Phillips coach Troy McAllister said. "He's tall and can run and has great hips. He had a great state playoff run and got some great film. He really liked the family atmosphere at NIU."

Phillips good for football; football good for Wildcats
Phillips good for football; football good for Wildcats
Warren became the second Phillips player from the Class of 2017 to commit to a college. Defensive tackle Chris Elmore pledged a commitment to Western Michigan earlier this spring.

"I'm so excited to play (at NIU) next year and also to help us win back-to-back state championships at Phillips," Warren said.
