2016 CAA Awards Predictions - Seahawk Nation 08 - 03-03-2016 09:00 AM

Coach of the Year: Kevin Keatts, UNCW

Rationale: Picked to finish 6th by the coaches in preseason, and despite anticipating that Year 3 would be when the Seahawks really become a special team, Coach Keatts led UNCW to a second straight share of the CAA Regular Season title, this time doing so when the league was ranked in the top 10. And he also did so with 4 freshmen and 3 transfers who hadn't played in 2 years. Truly impressive stuff, and really the only logical candidate for the award.

All-Rookie Team

Jarrell Brantley, Charleston
CJ Bryce, UNCW
Tyler Seibring, Elon
Terrell Allen, Drexel
Marquise Pointer, Charleston

Just missed: Jeremy Miller, Northeastern

Rookie of the Year: Jarrell Brantley, Charleston

Runner-Up: CJ Bryce, UNCW
3rd place: Tyler Seibring, Elon

Rationale: CJ Bryce had both Brantley and Tyler Seibring beaten in Rookie of the Week awards, 4 to 3, which made this choice very difficult. The problem for Bryce is that his role diminished down the stretch as his play wasn't quite as strong in the stretch run. Meanwhile, Brantley played a key role for a very young Charleston team, and ended up 14th in the CAA in scoring in CAA-only games, as well as 4th in rebounding. To be sure, Bryce played a crucial role at times for the 2-seeded Seahawks, but was not quite able to "finish the deal". Brantley is a worthy winner of the award in 2016.

CAA Third Team

Canyon Barry, Charleston
Kory Holden, Delaware
David Cohn, William & Mary
Ameen Tanksley, Hofstra
Denzel Ingram, UNCW

Honorable Mention: Shakir Brown, JMU; Mike Morsell, Towson; Tanner Samson, Elon

CAA Second Team

Omar Prewitt, William & Mary
Terry Tarpey, William & Mary
William Adala Moto, Towson
David Walker, Northeastern
Marvin King-Davis, Delaware

CAA First Team

Juan'ya Green, Hofstra
Quincy Ford, Northeastern
Ron Curry, James Madison
Rokas Gustys, Hofstra
Chris Flemmings, UNCW

Player of the Year: Juan'ya Green, Hofstra

Runner-Up: Quincy Ford, Northeastern
3rd Place: Ron Curry, James Madison

Rationale: Green was consistently the best player in the league from the start of the season to the finish, and was the MVP for the top-seeded team heading into the CAA Tournament. There were several quality candidates, including his own teammate Rokas Gustys, but Green was the guy for Hofstra with the ball in his hands when the game was on the line.

You could certainly make a fine case for the CAA's top scorer, Ron Curry, whose team looked completely lost without him in the lineup, and who at times willed his team to victory. You could also make a case for Quincy Ford, who similarly had to watch from the sidelines for several games while his team struggled without him, only to return and lead the Huskies into the CAA Tournament on a hot streak. But Green not only won CAA player of the Week a league-high 5 times and finished 2nd in CAA-only games in scoring, he was also first by far in the league in assists. The entire Hofstra offense ran through him, as he put together one gutty effort after another night in and night out. Green is your CAA Player of the Year.

Hard to see Barry as all-caa when he only played 13 games.

He won 3 CAA Player-of-the-Week awards this season, only one of 3 players to win the award 3 or more times this season along with Green and Ford. Kind of hard to ignore that and punish him for getting hurt. Maybe he only gets "Honorable Mention" but I think he deserves something.

Replace Ford with Tarpey and I think that's who will come home with the top team honors tonight. But wouldn't be surprised to see anyone in your top two teams on the 1st team.

Here is another take from the Drexel faithful over at dragonspeak. Certainly some similarities and differences.

Pretty similar Dan, not sure how you can have an all freshman team without Bryce. Maybe just an over site?

RE: 2016 CAA Awards Predictions - B_Hawk06 - 03-03-2016 01:54 PM

No way in hell CJ Bryce doesn't make the All Fresh squad.

RE: 2016 CAA Awards Predictions - Alpha Hawk - 03-03-2016 05:15 PM

I hope we get shut out of all the awards and then we can have a chip on our shoulder like when Tommy Burleson made Len Elmore his bi=== during ACC tourney

RE: 2016 CAA Awards Predictions - 82hawk - 03-03-2016 08:00 PM

Not a bad year.

Back to back COY for Keatts.

1st team CAA for Flemmings

3rd team CAA for Ingram

All Rookie team for Bryce.

All return next year.

Great news! Well done

2016 CAA Awards Predictions - B_Hawk06 - 03-03-2016 08:10 PM

We were picked at the bottom last year. Finished tied for 1st. Picked 6th this year, finished tied for 1st. We only lose Sherwood and Hickson next year.

Keatts is the first CAA coach to ever win top coach back to back.

Are we seeing the emergence of a new UNCW dynasty?!

RE: 2016 CAA Awards Predictions - solohawks - 03-03-2016 08:14 PM

You forgot ponder. But I do agree we will be very good next year. Perhaps we will get into the top half of the caa preseason rankings

2016 CAA Awards Predictions - Seahawkhoops - 03-03-2016 08:26 PM

I'm ok with the awards except I'd swap Ingram with Tanksley

RE: 2016 CAA Awards Predictions - SEA33HAWK - 03-03-2016 08:30 PM

Flemmings is the first player in CAA history to walk on and make first team all CAA.

Interesting to see "ponytail" on the all academic team. Wouldn't think a kid with a ponytail would be smart. Bahahaha

Sure did. Maybe I don't want him to go just yet.
