Our new QB coach (Wes Beschorner) just followed Duke Grad Transfer QB Thomas Sirk on Twitter.

I was wondering if that might be a possibility. Still a long way to go, but was intrigued.

Would be great if we can get him and have a starting QB penciled in by this summer. Was a decent starting QB for them for two seasons.

Maybe this was the plan behind not playing the back ups more.

But if we do get him, it will be imperative to sit him a lot and get reps for the 2018 QBs.

Disagree with this. You should play him nonstop. Especially if he's shaky the entire season, we have no shot at a bowl, and we're getting blown out in the 3rd quarter. That's the most critical time to keep your redshirt senior QB in.

Lol.

On the Duke QB - hope that at the very least, the twitter follow by our OC means we're after him. This would be a huge get, if only for one season. He's one of the best duel-threat QB's in the nation, period. Only question is his health. He's not permitted to transfer to another team in the ACC or any scheduled Duke opponent, and Rice being similar to Duke in several ways, I can see it being a great fit. Would change our outlook for 2017 quite a bit.

Won't help at Rice. Duels have been outlawed in Texas for years.

Excellent Smithers about the duel that is[/i]

You make a great point, albeit sarcastically. Why waste the season playing a QB who will not be back? Sit the transfer, start the freshman and let him get some badly needed experience that will make the difference in his sophomore year.

Depends on who the senior QB is. You don't waste the season if you win 10 games with a superior grad transfer QB. It's like adding an experienced, successful, dual*-threat like Chase Clement for a season - you play him all the way and you'll win 4 or 5 more games because of him. Bailiff, like almost all college football coaches, is coaching for right now, not next season. Anyway, the Duke guy is scheduled to visit the Florida Gators and others. I'm sure a lot of teams will show interest as he's a 6'4 proven play-maker at the P5 level. This is probably a long shot for Rice.

He would have had at least one year at Duke when Kurt Roper was OC there. I don't know if the new QB coach knows of Kurt nor whether Kurt has any interest in the young man, but it is a connection that might help.

RE: 2017 Football Recruiting - Fort Bend Owl - 04-08-2017 08:04 PM

Sirk is going to East Carolina.

RE: 2017 Football Recruiting - Fort Bend Owl - 04-11-2017 07:00 AM

Nick Sorensen, 6-1 WR from Cypress Lakes High School has tweeted he'll be attending Rice to play football. I'm not sure if he's scholarship or a preferred walk-on.

Good question. With the graduation transfers, I wondered if the staff will recruit some late signers or put more walk-ons on scholarship.

RE: 2017 Football Recruiting - 07owl - 04-11-2017 01:26 PM

@RiceChron

New addition to the Rice football '17 recruiting class Nick Sorensen will be a walk-on. WR from Cypress Ranch

One of our other football commits, Cam Montgomery, has a 100m PR that would put him in the top 5 of conference.

Thought I'd cross-post this in the recruiting thread, too.

RE: 2017 Football Recruiting - Pan95 - 06-20-2017 02:14 PM

The roster has been updated. All the freshmen have their assigned numbers. Also, there are 7 new walkons.

RE: 2017 Football Recruiting - talon owl - 06-23-2017 09:21 PM

We have two freshman WRs from Klein High named Austin.

RE: 2017 Football Recruiting - Fort Bend Owl - 07-05-2017 08:19 PM

Has Robbie Blosser been on the football roster the last month? I just noticed him - he's a pro-style QB from Los Angeles who was going to walk on at Mississippi State (he did have an offer from UNT, and a lot of schools wanted him as a preferred walk-on). He's a 3 star recruit according to 24/7 sports. I wonder if we actually offered him a scholarship at the last moment.

I also see we have a 6-3 WR from the Netherlands on the roster now. I'm pretty sure he's a walk-on, but that's another one I don't recall seeing before.

This makes the fall QB competition even more interesting.

RE: 2017 Football Recruiting - gsloth - 07-05-2017 09:21 PM

The other thing I'm finding interesting is that more pro-style QBs seem to be getting recruited now (thinking 2018). Is the new offensive staff changing things up a bit?

Our very own Baker Mayfield ?

I think that we are incorporating offensive elements from Pitt.
