Just completed the survey. Halfway through I received a note indicating that not enough surveys had been completed in order for a profile of Old Dominion University to be published...more surveys need to be completed and submitted. Get active, folks!

I noticed there is no selection for alumni, just active students

Guess you can be a senior again for the survey

As a person who works in Higher Ed marketing, I know having enough students participate, and more importantly, rate the school and their experience well, is critical to these rankings. USNWR is placing an increasing amount of weight on these surveys vs. incoming SAT scores, etc. Of course the final rating is a combination of selectivity, survey results, student faculty ratio, graduation rate, SAT scores, alumni giving and plain ole bias. It would be great to get enough responses to be included and get a good showing. Encourage your classmates to participate, and rate ODU well if they are happy with the school.

Is it just me, or is there actually a typo in the email sent from ODU's VP Jane Dane about ranking us highly? Shouldn't it be "one of Princeton Review's top universitIES"? And the "S" in the headline should be capitalized. Man, thats especially embarrassing coming from a VP. ODU just can't seem to get it right on these types of things. I guess thats part of why we can't get over the hump into Tier 1, when we've been so close for so long.

The MBA got ranked this year, largely due to the efforts of the aids reaching out to all the Alum to complete the survey.

Idea CONfusion

It should be noted that most of these rankings survey groups frown upon school-led initiatives to get people to participate. The loophole many colleges use is that the school strongly encourages student groups to do "get out the vote" type efforts. The rankings groups want the responses to be student led, in part because it serves to show how engaged the student body is. Do they care enough to participate? So the school isn't twisting anyone's arm, but other students are. If we can get Big Blue to win Mascot of the Year, surely enough undergrads can participate to get us included, and more importantly rise in the rankings.

Makes me think the entire "ranking" system is garbage

I agree with you.
It is, however a tool in place to help people determine which school to go to / send their children. There is something to be said from earning your degree from a school that does a more effective job giving their students an education.
The way that is determined is flawed, like anything else.

Oh it is. Schools "game" the system all the time. Many times they chase the "number" rather than focusing on education. They make all these adjustments to look better to the rankers, then the rankers change the criteria and the schools get upset. Its mind boggling. That said, it's vitally important to recruiting the best students. Their parents, and the students themselves get all hung up on the numbers, rather than looking at other areas of importance. Not being "Tier 1" certainly costs ODU a large number of prospects to peer schools who are just over the line into the top tier. The worst part is the role "peer perception" plays in rankings. Thats where the "i'll vote for you if you vote for me" horse trading starts. It's also where athletic prowess and conference affiliation can play a role in university rankings. The more popular you are, the higher some professor in a flyover state will rank you for the simple fact that they have heard of you or saw your team play on TV. Some schools have full time employees dedicated to nothing but trying to keep up with rankings, making sure programs are included, well represented and figuring out what needs to be done to move up the list. I've literally seen champaign toasts by high level administrators because a program moved up 2 spots and people reamed out for programs dropping.

The rankings systems are BS, but if you are a college, they are very important because your students, donors, professors, parents and alumni say they are.

well, if all that it takes is "internet votes" ... we can make ODU the top academic institution on earth.

We've done this before...

Haha, how prophetic that voting was. Big Blue beat out both WKU's red blob, and later UTEP's Paydirt Pete in the final. Good times!

I can just see it now, "Mom, I got acceptance letters from Stanford, M.I.T., Harvard and Old Dominion... "

It be nice to see us at VT level. Still a long ways away from UVA, but it would be an improvement. At least were not ecpi.

Someone needs to get this to the sororities and fraternities.

The SVA had e-mailed it out to it's members roughly a week or so before the school sent it out to everyone.

Odds are People just deleted it with out looking at it, or simply stopped once they it required more effort that just choosing a 1-5 rating.
